What if the owner dies?

This past weekend I was hit with some terrible news about a very close friend of a friend who died suddenly. The family is currently in the process of dealing with this sudden death. One thing they are facing is what to do with her Rottweiler that she left behind. She was about to put together a Living Will but died right before she was able to meet with her lawyer this week. As soon as I get all the information on this dog I will post some information on him for possible adoption. From what I gather this dog is very sweet and gentle with everyone (including kids). Let's just hope that a relative comes forward and decides to keep the dog. As you know if my friend or I have anything to do with it this dog will not be put in a shelter where he could be euthanized.

In the meantime this got us to thinking (me, my husband, my friend and her husband) about putting together a living will in the event something does happen to any of us. Most often we don't think about such things, especially when it comes to our pets. Even when people put together a will, they tend to think of who the house goes to, how much money goes to what relative and so on and so on. Now if you really care for your pet, chances are you would not forget about him or her but occasionally people do. In this case the friend probably would have put the dog in her will but as you can see she never got the chance to.

So I did a little research and found some websites that may be of help. Here's how to name a pet custodian in a will. Here's a website that will help you create a trust plan for your pet.

Also if you are in this predicament or if you cannot financially take care of your pet or you fall ill the Spca LA will help you. The website also includes resources on other organizations that Help Find Homes For Pets.

Wow that's really awful. Sorry to hear about your friend!!!!

Yes, too often, when something happens to the owners, the pets get discarded and/or treated pretty bad. Some relatives just couldn't care less about the pets. Although...i've heard in a few cases, some pets actually manage to inherit more of the family fortune than the kids do!Yay!LOL

Anyway, I'm sure with you all keeping an eye on things, the Rottweiler will be in good hands. :)

Rottweilers are very nice dogs.

They are very cool dogs! I had a friend that had a rotty mix. People were intimidated by her until they realized just what a big baby she was. Yeah I definitely hope we can find a home for him. :)
