Baby QB Item Of The Day
When the Wilmington News-Journal broke the story of the Baby Quarterback committing to USC, it begged the question who leaked the story? The family? A middle-school coach?
It's a little troubling because it obviously benefits Steve Clarkson (the private QB coach) and Lane Kiffin. And it benefits the Baby Quarterback. Hopefully, his family was not seeking publicity already for their 13-year-old.
Otherwise, we might see him pull up to USC in a limo to formally announce his commitment, like another Clarkson client, Jimmy Clausen.

It's been pretty well established that it was the middle-school coach. Unless you're suggesting that he was put up to it. In which case you're presenting very idle speculation with absolutely no corroboration.
My guess it would be Clarkson. For a private QB coach, everybody knows who his clients are and were. And can we please just get over this topic. Everyone involved knows that an eighth grader can not be offered. It is my guess, albeit just a guess, that the offer was probably made kind of tongue in cheek. Kiff just wants to get his foot in the door in case he develops.
I guess I'm missing something. This s a problem because ...? If I'm the kid's father, am I upset that my seventh grade son already has an all-expenses-paid college education at USC in the bank? Where do I sign up?
What about this story "troubles" you, Scott?
Scott is very "troubled" because it kills him to see a 13 y.o. like "Baby QB" exploited by the media to sell papers and generate blog hits. It's really swell to see a guy in Scott's position so concerned about media abuse.
And as far as the free advertisement for Clarkson, it's a shame that Scott absolutely had print his name so many times the past few days...and probably in the upcoming days, too. Scott had no choice at all but to promote Clarkson. Really unfortunate to be so powerless, isn't it Scott? I mean all the other major news media are still beating this story, aren't they?
Scott,
what's "troubling" is a grown man's obsession with a 13 year old boy
its creepy. let it go and focus on something else
Scott you just said in your post that everyone (Clarkson, Kiffin, and the QB) is benefiting from this. Why is that troubling?
poor kid when he has bad game. Hope he does not go Marinovich
I thought it would be some enterprising, ambitious reporter digging for dirt and finding gold. That would eliminate Scotty.
pdx: "what's "troubling" is a grown man's obsession with a 13 year old boy"...you are talking about Kiff, right?
as usual, while the gaggle of media consumes the flashy elements of this sideshow, only wolf sees the real issue here: exploitation of a 13yr old used to publicize Kiff's buddy Clarkson and Mr Lohan, er i mean Mr. Sills. it was Dad who called all the papers the day his boy signed. also we you aware the Baby QB has a publicist? yeah.
wolf you were cheated out of the Pulizter last time, but this is your year.
poor kid when he has bad game. Hope he does not go Marinovich
Paulm, I hope the kid works out, as well. But again, the worst case is he gets a free education at SC.
sounds like charlie had one too many gulps of teh contents of rick's passion bucket.
must you continue to call this teenager a baby? If you are soooo concerned about his well-being, then why would you continue to refer to him in such a derogatory nick name? be the bigger person scott, not the media type that pushes this kid over the age. your a grown man, arent you about name calling?
Hey idiots, the kid didn't sign anything. He committed;I could commit too if I hadn't used up all my eligibility. It's a publicity stunt just like the kid in the balloon that got away.Go to class and learn something!
Wolf - What is the "Baby" business all about? I simply don't get it...not everyone lives at home well into there 50's like perhaps you do. My best friend left home at 13 to play Jr. A Hockey with and against 18 - 20 year olds. I went at age 15, it is no big deal where I come from, if you a more advanced in life, then you advance, it's simple as that. I am shocked how fascinated you are by all this, other than to think you were probably well into to your 30's the first time you ever got felt up at a drive in. The only other guy that is on board with you is Charlie Bucket, and I'm guessing its' because he was the guy at the drive in with you! Now leave the young man alone, you wonder how some of these guys get truly F'd up, well a large part of it is media whores like you trying to make a living off writing about them 24-7, that is the truly sad part. The part about him being a young, hard working, bright young man who is a tremendously gifted athlete is impressive.
While Wolf continuing to refer to the kid QB is "Baby" is pretty awful, what's almost as troubling about Wolf's post is that, although he pretends to be a "journalist," he obviously believes that "begs the question" means "raises the question."
It doesn't. Never has. This usage is an all-too-common, but inexcusable, mistake.
There's even a website dedicated to explaining it to boobs:
begthequestion.info
And, I quote:
---- What is "Begging the Question?"
"Begging the question" is a form of logical fallacy in which a statement or claim is assumed to be true without evidence other than the statement or claim itself. When one begs the question, the initial assumption of a statement is treated as already proven without any logic to show why the statement is true in the first place.
A simple example would be "I think he is unattractive because he is ugly." The adjective "ugly" does not explain why the subject is "unattractive" -- they virtually amount to the same subjective meaning, and the proof is merely a restatement of the premise. The sentence has begged the question.
What is it Not?
To beg the question does not mean "to raise the question." (e.g. "It begs the question, why is he so dumb?") This is a common error of usage made by those who mistake the word "question" in the phrase to refer to a literal question. Sadly, the error has grown more and more common with time, such that even journalists, advertisers, and major mass media entities have fallen prey to "BTQ Abuse."
While descriptivists and other such laissez-faire linguists are content to allow the misconception to fall into the vernacular, it cannot be denied that logic and philosophy stand to lose an important conceptual label should the meaning of BTQ become diluted to the point that we must constantly distinguish between the traditional usage and the erroneous "modern" usage. This is why we fight. ----
