DEL RIO SENT CONTRACT TO BECOME NEXT USC COACH
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio was sent a contract by USC tonight to become the next football coach.
Now comes the tricky part: If Del Rio takes the job, he forfeits more than $15 million in salary from the Jaguars. If Jacksonville fires him, they must pay him the money. Why would Jacksonville fire him if they know USC wants him? Should make Tuesday interesting.

I knew Garret would F it up, I am pretty sure Jacksonville was going to fire JDR tomorrow anyway, but now their owner probably won't...and leave it up to JDR to decide...the fans in Jacksonville want to move on, they are pissed they missed the playoffs this year...$15 million guaranteed is hard to pass up..though he could make close to that at USC, and of course he has enough money to live comfortably, to say the least...
Good move by JDR if he takes it. Jags a sinking ship/job. Money not the issue here. SC will take care of him just fine...More importantly- who will he bring in to assist...stay tuned
how is he going to explain for drafting so many ucla guys?
i was hoping for Herm Edwards
Herm Edwards would be a disaster...not a fan of his..too out of touch and horrible NFL coach
westcoaster, you are truly a mental juggernaut. I want to give him props for his profound insight. When the whole goal is to get a big name whose going to show loyalty and long-term stability as fast as possible, Garrett Delivered in a big way but it apparently did not impress westcoaster. MG comes through again. Lets see who is going to be on the staff.
Sending him a contract without even interviewing!?!
This reeks of desperation. How far down the list have they already gone?
No Riley, no Harbaugh, no Wittingham, no Peterson?
No proven college coaches...just a legacy who is a so-so NFL guy. Can he recruit? Can he get the right assistants? Is he prepared to take over a sanctioned program?
Ummmm...USC football is in trouble.
herm edwards worked under monte kiffin. he would be a great recruiter because he knows how to sell
why does this move reek of desperation to me? you know, it's not too crazy to look for someone who doesn't have USC ties. I'm hoping the remainder of the staff includes guys like Chow and Orgeron...but if it doesn't, we just hired a guy who was mediocre in the pros and who doesn't have any college experience
i know it worked for Carroll but he's a once in a generation type coach
I am fan of JDR over Herm Edwards...I just think Garret should offer JDR a contract AFTER his meeting with the Jags owner, it lays off the pressure for JDR, though it would show tremendous loyalty if he accepts the SC head coaching job, because that means he wants to coach SC even if that means losing $15 million guaranteed..good insight
And this just in from Wolfie...CJ Spiller commits to SC!
yeah, Herm Edwards reminds me of a used car salseman for dodge caravans...
I gotta believe that the Jags and Del Rio have had an inclination of what is to be discussed at their scheduled meeting - & the writing has been on the wall after the season wrapped up. It gets interesting now that the contract has been delivered.
The Jags can't afford the payout and Del Rio has the opportunity to move into another gig. I'm sure they will part with some remuneration short of the $15mil but enough for Del Rio to move on to the SC challenge (and a healthy contract). Interesting that the Jags are top rumor on a re-locate to LA in the years to come.
Vital to get this done quickly for the benefit of the program.
Here's a pic of hot coeds - rare that Scott hasn't creeped his way into this photo.

del rio seems qualified. i'm pretty sure MG plans to follow in Carroll's footsteps; he would surround the coach with coaches who have qualifying college coaching experience.
names we've heard are chow and orgeron. i would assume it be smart to have people around that have a network of the college world.
WOW. WHAT'S WITH THE "WAR IS OVER"-SIZED HEADLINE?
No one knows how well Del Rio will do as the USC head coach, if that happens. I hope he does damn well. For those who have called for Chris Petersen, keep in mind that he just signed a five-year extension to his contract.
Chris Petersen runs a spread-type offense, wouldn't like that here...though he could be Urban Meyer 2.0, what about Jon Gruden?
JDR has a winning record in Jacksonville despite never having an elite QB. JDR is one of the original architects of the exalted Ravens defense. JDR is young and energetic. He has fantastic coaching experience. He is a socal Trojan type of guy. And, Pat Haden and Ed Roski will ensure that JDR assembles an elite staff.
Let's hope we get a deal done. This is great news.
My hope was to lure Chris Petersen away from Boise State, as I've stated many times that I think Petersen at USC would be Urban Meyer 2.0 - but I guess Mike Garrett's Rolodex is only full of people with SC ties.
That being said, JDR at SC could be a great thing, provided he hires Norm Chow as his offensive coordinator (I'd prefer NC to Dirk Koetter, although he wouldn't be bad either) and gets Coach O involved. I think everybody in the world knows Coach O is the best recruiter in the nation and I know Trojan Nation would welcome both back with open arms.
I will agree with westcoaster's assessment of the timing of the JDR contract offer though. SC probably could have saved a couple extra million by having Jacksonville pay at least a portion of JDR's contract and that money could have been used on assistants. It just seems that no matter what MG does, he effs it up somehow.
Once the coaching search is concluded, I hope Dr. Sample begins the search for a new AD because MG has made it quite clear that he is not up to the task.
mike garrett will not go after coaches who employ nothing but a whacky offense (the spread). i am a fan of the spread and wildcat but would not commit entirely unto it.
i always wished PC would've added a few plays of the spread to make the playbook more innovative, but that passed when Corp got demoted.
however, if baxter does decide to honor his committment, i would love to see him run a few plays from the wildcat. he would add that eplosiveness.
other than that, i'm pretty sure 'SC is sticking to a Pro-Stlye offense. if someone comes and does a complete 360 we could see results like RichRod from Meeeechigan.
HAHAHA! i see Garrett is not quite "reaching for the stars" like Plashche is recommending in tomorrow's LAT...so Garrett feels the need to jump at the chance to hire Double Del Rio with Beans? what a visionary.
sure he caught lightening in a bottle with his chetey petey hire, but since then he has been king midas in reverse with the scandals and the lame hires (Krueter, Floyd, etc.)
oh, MERCY NURSE!!
and once again, wolf you are scooping the entire country, congrats to the master!
Interesting if true
But Scott, then why does a reporter for the jaguars say that Del Rio was in meetings with his staff all day and then his Jaguars office until 10 pm tonight?
Kinda makes it hard to put together a staff and interview for the SC job from the offices of your current employer
Are you sure you didn't jump the gun on this one. Or is someone at HH trying to punk you?
here's the link
http://jacksonville.com/interact/blog/michael_c_wright/2010-01-12/del_rio_likely_to_return_as_jaguars_coach_for_2010
Yeah, I read that too, that does make a lot of sense, though one has to believe JDR is very interested in the job, jacksonville is a garbage dump, remember the super bowl there a few years ago? Everyone hated the place...he is never going to win a super bowl there, why not move back to LA, it seems way more fun and exciting
Why not move back to LA with the entire Jaguar organization? City of Industry awaits you.....just not 2010 or 2011. How fast can they built a stadium anyways?
the more I read this, the more it seems both Scott and the jaguars writer could be right
which means its possible USC is trying to hire someone without a formal interview? that kind of looks bad, even if he is a good hire
I don't mind Jack Del Rio but we need a offense mind like Chow if we bring in Rio. I am a little leary of recruting with Jack Del Rio too. (Personality-wise).
Secondly, would like to hear a real GUT FEELING on what people think is going to happen with these sanctions.
I really have not heard anything of substance. But the NCAA is very corrupt and is determined to show some arm of power. It is a absolute joke. The corruption in the NCAA is huge. I am shocked and will find it hard to believe that a convicted felon can push his crap this far.
We have players with guns on campus and domestic violence cases around the country. But no sanctions.
( Texas for example) We have a story from a felon that the NCAA thinks they can make stick...Its a joke..
Speaking of Texas, does anyone believe that a functionally illiterate quarterback passed all his classes during his four years in Austin. I'd be willing to bet that there is a whole lot of academic fraud going on at UT.
Maltbaa, how is JDR going to explain drafting MJD who has outperformed the vastly overrated Bush so far in their careers? MJD at number 60 in round 2. geez, tough one.
You can easily explain MJD's success in the NFL:
He gained strength by pushing handicapped students out of the way while parking.
He gained speed while training with other Bruins who run from their (DUI induced) wrecked car, leaving coeds in peril.
And he gained the will to win after being drubbed 66-19 by his most hated rival.
See, public schools can be educational.
FIGHT ON!
Stop smoking crack in south central, sureshot
Jack is Pete on steroids with a learning disability.
LMAO, wow how intelligent. what does he have to do with the handicap issue? you are really comparing the improprieties? how much did you pay for that overrated education?
Fight on? Lol!!! your beloved pete ran away with the sanctions coming on Feb 19th NCAA meeting. Tell him to fight on. Apparently, OJ to those two words a little too literally.
how come no one is even considering coach harvey hyde? He is responsiuble for the randall cunningham and the great suge knight at UNLV
Jack is an average NFL coach who has worn out his welcome in Jville. The USC job is made to order for him. His only pro job opp would have been NFL coordinator waiting in a long line of exNFL head coaches for a 2nd chance. Jack will be forever grateful for having a safe place to land.
He is none too bright even by exNFL player standards but he is fiercely loyal and a hard worker who will bring enormous mental toughness back to the USC locker room. It would be nice to see him bring Coach Orgeron with him to help in recruiting but I have no idea on the chemistry between these 2.
He is well aware of the pending NCAA sanctions and is prepared to weather the storm come what may. For the unimaginitive MG, this is a damn lucky hire if it closes. Jack's familiarity with what it takes to be an NFL player will be a big plus in recruiting the A list kids USC has been getting in the PC era.
Look for him to bring in a completely new staff if he is advised that the NCAA problems are as serious as they appear. Keeping so much as 1 PC coach would indicate that he is not concerned about the old regime being a liability in the program cleanup. My bet is that whoever comes in cleans house and that the sanctions will be harsh.
2010 USC with Jack in charge will be much better than the 2009 version. No more blowouts. Noone will put up even 35 points, much less 50, on a JDR Trojan team. Jack may be stuck with Barkley but Bradford will run for 2000 yards.
Cheer up Trojan nation - we just got an upgrade from the pirate who left us to clean up his mess. Whats your deal, Coach Pete? Sudden great opportunity my butt. Just an unwillingness to take responsibility for NCAA violations and tough out 2-3 years. The best thing and the worst thing to ever happen to Trojan football.
Del Rio is not loyal. MaltBaa is right about BRuin hires. Let Westwood find a place for him. This is a nightmare.
OK. Phase One of the Del Rio/Chow/Orgeron triumverate is done.
I am afraid I will not be optimistic unless the last two thirds is delivered as well.
Del Rio seems a bit stiif, but I think that everyone is stiff compared to Carroll, so that may be an unfair comparison. I hope he can lose the scowl and the propensity to wear a suit on the sideline and remember why college is so awesome. If he can loosen up a bit, I think he can be a great head coach. If The Sweater Vest can be successful at Ohio State with his personna, then Del Rio can at USC, I think.
Anyone who judges a person's "loyalty" by who his team drafts in the NFL is grasping at butterflies. As soon as a player enters the NFL draft, what school he goes to has zero bearing. Who cares if the Jags drafted Bruins? Jeez.
Are Matt Millen and Marvin Lewis "good Trojans" because they drafted so many USC players? Duh.
What the hell is Duane Bickett up to these days?
I didn't like Carroll's hire either but it turned out great. Petersen would have been my guy but why would he want the job when all he has to do is win a couple of hard games a year?
