Pathetic Press Conference
USC coach Pete Carroll was extremely ungracious during the Mark Sanchez press conference. He stormed out of the room and did not even sit at the table before Sanchez addressed the media. Something he never did when Matt Leinart, etc., announced their decisions.
Carroll never sat down at the table but stood with his palms on the table. His anger was clear if you spend time around him.
Not a great moment.
UPDATED: Carroll did sit at the table at the outset but said tonight he wanted to stand at a podium but none was provided by USC officials, so that's why he stood and appeared frustrated.

Wow, that's truly amazing. After the track record that Pete has had with developing NFL prospects, how could you go against his advice???? One answer, the almighty dollar!
Seriously? I have never seen Pete lose his cool at a media event. I'm shocked.
Carroll knows that Sanchez is not ready. I don't blame him for being unhappy, because he truly thinks that Sanchez is making the wrong decision. By the way, they showed the news conference on ESPN, and Carroll was SITTING while addressing the media with Sanchez by his side. He made clear that Sanchez should stay at USC to grow as a QB. He then left before Sanchez addressed the media.
It was a blindsided move by Sanchez. there is no way Pete Carroll could have been ready for it.
Very unfortunate behavior from Carroll. Childish.
I wish Mark the best.
Why pass on a potential of lifetime security ($$$) for another year of injury risk and lower draft status in 2010? Did it work for Leinart?
PC. Not surprising. Typical. What do you expect?
Sad to say, but there is a bombshell waiting to explode regarding Sanchez apparently. Word in other forums is that a Sanchez family member had dealings with an agent regarding Mark. Could Pete be upset now that Mark and his family finally told him of this?
Are there any links to the full press conference?
I don't blame Sanchez. This is a week draft class for Quarterbacks. I think Sanchez definitely needs more time to develop, but he could improve at the pro level just as easily as the college level.
Did any of you see the press conference? I did, and I don't agree with Wolf's accessment. Carroll told the truth. The facts are the facts, and QBs who come out early have a terrible record of making it in the NFL. This is not the last time Carroll will be put in this spot, and if he lied about supporting Sanchez he would be hard pressed to tell another player how he felt about them leaving early.
uscmike:
Carroll isn't mad because Sanchez isn't ready. He's mad because Corp and Mustain aren't ready and he wanted to be able to redshirt Barkley. With Sanchez, Corp and Mustain he would have been able to redshirt Barkley. Now, he'll have to play Barkley once it becomes clear Corp and Mustain aren't starter material. The Trojans lose like nine starters on defense and were counting on the offense next year. Without Sanchez, the whole season becomes a crapshoot.
Pete is like a whiny little brat who doesn't get what he wants for his birthday. Why not just be gracious and classy and say: "Mark was a great (toejam) and we thank him for his contributions to our (shady ethics) program."? I am glad Scott Wolf called it like it was because you know the typical sc fan would rather eat Pete's morning shave remains rather than actually call him out even when it is deserved. Let the kid go earn his money and wish him well. Maybe he had a talk with a Reggie Bush-gate investigation team member and knows whats up? Just speculatin'
That press conference was WAY out there. I doubt Sanchez is going to be invited back to campus anytime soon.
usc mike....Carroll took questions after Sanchez addressed the media. Not sure what you are talking about?
I listened to the press conference and (as usual) Wolf is exaggerating the tension for dramatic purposes. Also, can we PLEASE STOP USING MATT LEINART AS A REASON TO LEAVE EARLY!!!! Matt did great his senior year. Third in Heisman ballots and 1 play as going down as the most successful college quarterback ever. He was drafted 10th in the first round for crying out loud!!! He got a crap load of money, had all of the media hype and contracts, etc. The only thing that has hurt Matt Leinart is Matt Leinart. If he had kept his head in the game, he would be 1 game away from the Super Bowl and getting the biggest contract extension in the league in the off season. Let's stop saying that Matt Leinart coming back was a mistake. It wasn't and if he had played as well as his talents, we'd be using him as an example of why quarterbacks should go back for their senior year.
I'm guessing PC was blindsided by the decision and he isn't used to being surprised. First Presley blindsides him and now Sanchez. PC will be okay, he and coach Smith just need to develop Corp & Mustain and keep the train on the track.
Hey Old School, if what you say is correct this is Bush all over again, no wonder Carroll was pissed
There was definite dislike for Sanchez from Pete. I was there and Pete was not happy with Sanchez and he didn't care who knew it.
Trojan Conquest: I am just going on what Wolf reported, and then ESPN's Shelley Smith reported that Carroll left. I wasn't there, so I don't know. My only point was that Carroll was sitting during the press conference in the video that I saw, not standing as claimed by Wolf. If I am wrong about when Pete spoke, then maybe I misunderstood what Wolf and ESPN was saying.
We all know Pete has got a temper-- show me a football coach who doesn't.
But I cannot believe Pete got mad because of Sanchez's decision-- he loses juniors every year along with coaches, and he usually gives them his blessings.
No, I think it might have something to do with Sanchez electing to be courted by an agent while playing ball, and thus jeopardizing the program.
uscmike....I saw it on TV and it looked like Carroll was standing off to the side when Sanchez was speaking. He then sat down and made a statement. After the statement he looked like he was done and got up. He then was asked some questions that he answered standing up. I thought it was refreshing that he told the truth. There's probably some truth to what Wolf said, but I think he's making more out of it than was there. It's obvious that Wolf isn't Carroll's biggest fan.
Wolf is such a girl! I was at the press conference and saw Scott walk in 15 minutes into a 20 minute press conference. He is writing on a subject he saw very little of. Coach Carroll was disappointed, and rightfully so, he feels Mark made the wrong choice, and used it as a teachable moment for the other players in attendance. Mark did what he had to do from a business standpoint. Coach made it clear that Mark will always be welcome and always be a member of the Trojan Family. Scott is just over-exaggerating his bitchy opinion.
Old School:
Yesterday ESPN reported that Sanchez was going pro, but that his family was advising him to stay in school. If his family was indeed dealing with an agent its makes no sense as to why they would be telling him to stay in school, of course it could all have been a cover up as well, but just wondering where you got your information from since it seems to conflict with other reports.
trjnhrse....I agree. But honestly, did Wolf walk in late? Is'nt this his job?
Wow, did Wolf really come in late to a press conference? Considering that is his job, to cover press conferences, that is pathetic. But it does support Wolf's statement that Pete was standing the whole time, while any of us who watched at home clearly saw Pete sit to give his statement and get up to leave when he was asked follow up questions and took them standing.
I mean what excuse could a USC beat reporter have for missing a press conference? Did he get caught up surfing the net for more photos of cheerleaders?
Watching the entire conference I didn't really think Pete was too out of line saying "Mark and I went back and forth late into the night about his decision and I disagree."
By all accounts unless you're a hot mormon girl sitting on his couch that doesn't want to have sex, Mark Sanchez is a fine young man with upstanding character.
Let's all wish him the best and move forward with either Corp/Barkley/Megadeth.
Sorry ucla fans and other haters - no agents involved here. Just common sense.
Most everyone posting on this board would have done the same thing if they were projected to be a top-20 draft pick/maybe as high as #1 overall. Yes, that means Carroll and you too Wolf. Especially in light of the competition from Bradford and McCoy in next year's draft. There's a good chance that only one qb will be drafted in the first round in 2010.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if Barkley is named the starter by November. I don't expect the others to be consistent.
Sorry I missed that press conference. That would have been a blast.
Sanchez going early is funny. There is no excuse to go early for him. He isn't ready to even carry a clipboard in the NFL, let alone playing in a place like Detroit where they are bad and won't be any good any time soon. They will not be next year's Atlanta Falcons. Plus, those fans do not mess around and they will eat him alive.
Not to mention that this is a once in a lifetime, one in a billion, situation he was in at USC. He will never ever get that back. He goes from playing for fun to playing against men that would just as soon kill him than have him succeed. These men are playing for their lives.
Say hello to 6-6 in '09.
Detroit isn't THAT stupid to draft him and he's not going in the first round, he's a second round prick uh pick.
It never ceases to amaze and amuse me that so many pathetic ruin fans hang on the USC blogs. I can't imagine myself joining a ruin blog to discuss whether rick new weasel won the campus football pool or which discarded JC transfer was going to be the second coming of Ben Olson. Sad really.
If the poster is correct in saying that Corp and Mustain may not be ready/good enough/starter material, in the QB role, who's to say that Barkely is starting material?
I earlier made comments that Carroll's behavior was "unfortunate" and "childish". I made those based on Wolf's assessment.
I was wrong...and Wolf is wrong.
"Carroll never sat down at the table but stood with his palms on the table." Is completely inaccurate. He sat down for several minutes and although expressed he felt Mark should return, he was gracious in wishing Mark the best and stating Mark is always a member of the Trojan family.
Wolf's opinion that Carroll is angry I think is a little strong. My impression was more disappointment than anger. I also completely disagree that Carroll was ungracious. I didn't see that at all.
How can Wolf post on a press conference he didn't even witness in person? If as one poster above stated Wolf didn't arrive till 15 minutes in he should keep his mouth shut.
The video footage suggests that most of Wolf's post above is not only inaccurate but a complete fabrication.
HAVE YOU NO SHAME!!??
WHY DO YOU STILL HAVE A JOB!?!?
To the idiot Bruins posting nonsensical quips like "not surprising" and "typical" when it comes to Pete's reaction...JUST SHUT UP! Anyone who knows anything about Pete would know that any sort of overtly negative reaction by Pete would not only be atypical of him but it would be very, very surprising indeed. If he showed anger at the press conference it would be surprising but also likely very justified.
Your program is a joke and you would trade all your players and the entire coaching staff today to have Pete come on board as your football coach. So JUST SHUT UP! Go to your own board and follow what little developments you have brewing. Maybe Presley can catch 500 passes and 50 TDs next year cause he's the only player worth a damn on your roster...
The Donkey says, more like PATHETIC REPORTING. The Donkey mocks scott and asks him why are you such a scandalous girl?
ESPN has video that makes your statements outright lies.
Easy there, Tyler. "JUST SHUT UP"? Are you related to Ryan Leaf? Anyway, we visit this blog for the comedy - not because we want your coach. We love seeing myopians go out of your way to deify Carroll while you mobbing townsfolk constantly show up with torches and pitchforks calling for Wolf's head :)
Trojan fan- show a little objectivity will ya? You may enjoy living in a fantasy la-la land where Caesar can do no wrong but Wolfy's job is to report USC news - for better or worse. Check other news outlets. He's not the only one giving low marks for this presser.
It makes sense for him to go pro early from an economic point of view, especially because Bradford didn't go pro this year. I can see why Pete is pissed off though because he loses his starting quarterback with a lot of experience.
BTW, it didn't pay for Leinart to stay for his senior year. In fact, he would have gone earlier in the draft had he come out his junior year.
Palmer ofcourse improved his stock during his senior year because he was so much better his senior year then his junior year.
You can be disappointed without being "pissed off". It's not the first player to leave early under Carroll's watch, so I would hesitate to rush to generalized conclusions.
I think what probably happened is that Sanchez had initially agreed with PC (prior to PC's vacation) that it would best for Sanchez to stay another year. In the meantime Sanchez changed his mind w/o consulting PC. To make things worse, Sanchez schedule this morning's press conference prior to informing PC of his decision. The meeting they had last night was an afterthought, as Sanchez had already made the decision to go pro.
I have to believe that Sanchez changed his mind once the Bradford rumors leaked.
Scott Wolf is PATHETIC if he indeed arrived 15 minutes late for this press conference, then went off what someone else said to write such derogatory words about Pete Carroll. I watched the entire press conference on TV, and though Pete did look annoyed and disagreed with the decision, he indeed was there for the whole thing, sat at the table and talked very candidly for several minutes, then got up and answered questions near the microphones. He was standing up near the mikes when he answered questions, but that was definitely after several minutes of talking about Sanchez while sitting down. My impression was, Pete was not happy with the decision - even Sanchez's family is not happy with the decision - but it is Mark's life and career to decide about.
He still has 3 days to change his mind. But he look resolved on TV today.
All that said, you will be pleasantly surprised to watch Aaron Corp play quarterback. We've all seen that Mitch Mustain is an extremely capable quarterback in limited time this past season, and Corp is an accurate passer who brings a new dimension - escapability via his tremendous running and scrambling talents - that make him even more dangerous as part of the USC attack. This kid is good - really good.
Lastly, as a USC alum, I sincerely hope the rumors (published elsewhere) that one of Mark's brothers got hooked up with an agent prove to be false. I would hate for another prolonged onslaught of negative headlines resulting from a player's family member who damaged the reputation of a player (like Reggie Bush's stepdad did to him).
Nothing pathetic about the press conference, only thing pathetic was Wolfe showing up 15 minutes late, if it is true.
What's the big deal? He made his decision now he can live with it, Pete didn't seem pissed to me, just dissapointed.
Mark is betting against the odds, look at all the past QB's with less than 2 years of starts that came out early Akili Smith for example, he is swimming against the tide.
Hell, he just made a business decision! MS knew that he'd be drafted after McCoy,Bradford and who knows whomever else.. if he waited until the 2010 draft. It was smart for his sake and he'll learn and develop as fast or faster at the next level than what he'd accomplish staying in college next season.
We all know Pete is generally a classless coach. So I'm not surprised.
