New recruit James Boyd, the Song Girls selection committee and the status of some free agents are topics here.

Q: Our new recruit, JAMES BOYD, seems rated fairly good, but with his weight listed between 210 and 230, and his speed at 4.8, it's hard for me to see where he plays----he thinks DE or LB----if that 4.8 is accurate,
where do the coaches, and yourself, see as his best position at the college level?

A: USC will let him start out at defensive end and see where it goes from there. He needs to get stronger obviously but we're still a year away from his anticipated arrival. USC's tried Michael Morgan at defensive end and he only weighs 213 pounds, so it's not inconceivable Boyd could be a defensive end, it's just a ``big ask'' at his current size.

Q: The following people are known to be on the selection committee for the USC Song Girls: Lori Nelson, Justine Gilman, Tim Tessalone and the Widow Bothwell. So who else, if any, also serve on the selection committee?

A: I understand there are some former Song Girls who from the past 30 years but not sure of their identities.

Q: Can you give us an update on the status of Trojan draftees and free agents at the pro camps. It is now just about July, and it is time to start hearing who has a shot at the roster and who doesn't.

A: All the guys who were drafted are still with those teams. Drew Radovich is with the Vikings. Matt Spanos was supposed to go the Dolphins although there's been some conflicting reports. Will Collins was with the Jets but I haven't heard if he is still there.
Desmond Reed got cut from a team while Hershel Dennis was still trying to sign with someone. Dale Thompson has decided to quit playing football.

I bet it's probably just some Song Girls from this decade, and since they are jealous of pretty and thin girls, they choose girls like themselves whom they won't be intimidated by. No way that Dolly Rouse would stand for these kind of squads.

About Inside USC

Scott Wolf has covered USC for the Daily News since 1996. A USC graduate, he covered his first Trojan game in 1984 for the Daily Trojan. Scott is known as the "scourge of the Internet message boards," according to radio host Petros Papadakis. Despite this moniker, there's no truth to the rumor he takes pleasure in antagonizing the "Internet geeks."
