Nelson hyperextends knee; Honeycutt back

| | Comments (22) |

From UCLA:

LOS ANGELES - Freshman forward/center Reeves Nelson hyperextended his right knee yesterday and was unable to finish practice. He had an MRI late Tuesday night and the results that were revealed this afternoon were negative. He did not practice today and will miss tomorrow's practice as well. He is slated to return to practice on Friday, Dec. 4, two days before UCLA hosts No. 1 Kansas as part of the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Nelson is slated to start his first collegiate game this weekend with the departure of sophomore Drew Gordon.

LOS ANGELES - Freshman forward Tyler Honeycutt returned to practice yesterday for the first time since Nov. 7 when an MRI confirmed (on Nov. 8) that he had a stress reaction in his right tibia. Honeycutt practiced for 30 minutes on Tuesday with full contact and for 45 minutes today. The plan is to increase his practice time by 15 minutes each day till Saturday when he will go for an hour and a half. He should be available to play for the Bruins when they host No. 1 Kansas as part of the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Honeycutt has missed the first six games of the 2009-10 season.

Jon, there are a lot of rumors out there that Honeycutt wants to leave as well. I've also heard Moser wants to go. Can you please investigate and tell us what's going on? These aren't kids, they're adults, so I don't see why everything has to be so guarded. Please let us know, it's why we read your blog/articles, to get insight and information that isn't anywhere else.

I hear that Roll, Keefe, and Dragovic want to transfer to. As well as Blake Arnet and Spencer Soo. Jon, please investigate.

You people are ridiculous. Let's all run wild with every possible rumor that pops in our head. Morons.

What the heck is going on? Swine flu is next for the whole team - you watch.

Actually, I guess if these things are gonna happen, this is the best year. The season is pretty much already lost so let's get the younger guys some experience so we can return strong next year. Now, here come the bloggers saying, "I can't believe that some people have given up on this team already... etc. etc. etc.". To be clear, that is not what I am saying. I watch and cheer each and every game and will continue to do so. I am looking at the bigger picture and the bigger picture includes one thing --> NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!

Have you heard about it??

I for one am excited to see Honeycutt on the floor this week. He looks like a Tayshawn Prince kind of player to me. Long enough to board and play above the rim, but can also shoot the mid range jumper etc.
He is uber-athletic! Can jump out the gym too!
Now dont anyone get over excited...he is still a frosh and going to be raw..but will give us a dribble drive kind of kid and add some much needed athleticism to the team.
I havent seen much from Moser yet, but Lane Nelson and Hoenycutt really give me hope for the future of UCLA.
I would think that Bobo HAS TO PLAY in this game given the size of Kansas big men. Nelson would be giving up close to 7 inches..Aldrich would tower over him and eat him alive.
It will take some serious double downs with Lane every time Aldrich touches the ball.
Its very likely that Kansas will run UCLA out of the gym. They are a very solid team. UCLA will need to slow it down and keep Kansas from running up the score in order to have a chance of winning.

Why would honeycutt want to leave at this point? Does he not like his relationship with the medical staff and trainer?

I don't deal in rumor, I DEAL IN FACT...

Jon,
Will you please consider making people register before they can make comments? There is absolutely no downside. You can register for free but hiding behind anonimity is just making it easy for some losers make ridiculous comments. Thanks

Ben sure is doing a great job of using the Dorrell tactic of using injuries and youth as a reason to lower expectations.

Time to face the facts Bruin fans, UCLA will never win a National Title with Howland.

So if I register as "Joe Blow" I am suddenly not anonymous?

I agree that some comments are ridiculous but even registered users can hide behind their keyboard.

What is to keep someone from registering under several names? So you ban the ip, can't you do the same for an anonymous user? Their info should be logged.

Ultimately this comes down to we should ignore what we deem ridiculous. Where do you stop the filtering?

There is great truth to what VB's opines about DG. He is happy with mediocrity in the 2 revenue generating sports, so long as his athletic department budget is balanced and the money pits sports win some NCs (i.e. Women's Water Polo, Golf, etc.). In his eyes, he is being successful. So, he merely tries to balance the 'needs' of the donors with his 'need' for legacy. DG has accepted the fact, in his eyes, that UCLA can;t really compete nationally in FB (due to academic contraints).

He is more concerned with the bottom line than anything else. To a fault. Yes, I know collegiate athletics is a business and he must balance the books, but at what cost? He cuts corners to save money at the fans' expense. He pushes the envelope as far as he can without totally pissing off the donors, and he makes every decision calculate the cost-benefit analysis to the bottom line. DG gets an A+ as Chariman of the Board, Chief Executive Office and vice-President of Compliance for UCLA Athletic Department, Inc. He gets a C- as Athletic Director.

VB: How is the house plant doing? I have not seen any of the plant's erudite comments recently. Maybe the plant can fill us in on what is up with Drew Gordon and Ben howland.

To the idiot anonymous who thinks that I'm posting BS about Honeycutt and Moser wanting to transfer, you're a moron and don't know what's going on. Honeycutt's hs coach has been saying that Honeycutt has been telling him that he is very unhappy with Howland and the way UCLA plays. Even though he's injured, he still watches the practices and the way they play, dummy. What I'd like Jon to do is investigate and find out what the F is going on. Really, I'm giving him a story lead that is very juicy and relevant to his beat.

VB,

Sorry, fencing is not a funded sport, it's a rec club funded by student fees and can't have a full time coach.

It appears VB isn't truthful and doesn't know much.

Revenue generating sports should be moved into the Department of Intercollegiate Entertainment. This would tip parity back in favor of men's sports, and we might be able to restore the men's programs in gymnastics, swimming, and rowing, and even move the Rugby team under the athletic department where they belong.

Question to Bruin Nation

Although we all disagree alot on this blog one common thread is that we want to see UCLA win championships.

Here is a conversation piece for everyone to weigh in on! If Calipari were the head coach in his 5th or 6th year at UCLA after going to 3 straight final fours how would our roster differ from this years roster?

I'll weigh in with another sign in! LOL!

RobM said:

If Calipari were the head coach, I'll admit that we'd have a much more exciting offense to watch. But we'd also probably be in the middle of an NCAA investigation by his 5th year. In the 6th year, we'd probably have to vacate our wins from those fictional Final Fours.

Its going to be a *very* rough year, but I'm sticking with BH. I can't believe so many people are already putting him on the hotseat. I think his positives heavily outweigh his negatives. Too many things to overcome for this season: rash of injuries, no preseason practice time, Gordon leaving. Really too bad though, I thought this team could be dangerous later in the season despite the horrible start. Before we just needed either Anderson or Lee to blossom to become a good team, but now we need to add Nelson, Moser, Honeycutt, and Morrison to the wishlist. Might be too much to ask for in the early season, but maybe when conference starts.... (*praying*)
