CONFIRMED: Hasiak reportedly takes indefinite leave from program

| | Comments (32) |

Freshman offensive guard Stan Hasiak has left the program for an undetermined length of time and traveled to his native Hawaii over the weekend before returning to Los Angeles.

Hasiak did not travel to Oregon State for UCLA's 26-19 loss on Oct. 31 and flew back to Hawaii late last week, not attending the team's 24-23 win over Washington on Saturday.

It has been a rather drastic fall from grace for the projected preseason starter, who was replaced by sophomore Jeff Baca before Week 1 against San Diego State, played more against Tennessee but was a non-factor for the past several weeks.

Hasiak was rated the No. 9 guard recruit in the country by Scout.com last season and was expected to contribute immediately to the Bruins patchwork offensive line.

Jon, the timing on this post is kinda weird, aren't you in the middle of a roundball game? Can you explain?

Sure, anon - when I find out information, I post it. If I learned this at 4 a.m., it would be up at 4 a.m.

I just wish Stan the best with whatever issues he may be dealing with. It's tough being away from home and dealing with a new environment as an 18yr. old. Though these kids bodies are like that of an NFLer, their maturity level is still that of a young man.

Any reason why? wtf is going on with that kid

j_doe Author Profile Page said:

Are you kidding me??? So now he will transfer and miss another year? Why not stick around and play next year? Geez, what a sense of entitlement from true freshmen.

tapptout Author Profile Page said:

It didn't say he transferred it just says he is taking an indefinite leave maybe he his not leaving the program permanently, maybe he is. I hope he is not but this stuff happens see Josh Smith, Darrell Scott, Aundre Dean, Kai Maiava, Willie Mobley, Joseph Fauria etc.

Sid said:

With all due respect, j_doe, stfu.

You have no idea what Stan might be dealing with. The only people who do are Stan, his family, and probably coach Neu. It is incredibly disrespectful of you to assume he has a character issue and is just being a "whiny freshman". For all you know, he might be dealing with some family struggles or psychological issues.

I really hope Stan gets his life sorted out and rejoins the UCLA program. He seems like a decent kid and has a lot of potential.

Bruintx Author Profile Page said:

Maybe the kid is just homesick. Different people deal with such things in different ways. Nobody has said he was leaving for good... yet. Maybe he just needs some time. But either way, geez, cut the kid some slack.

It was a long time ago, but I remember adjusting to life at UCLA. Not the easiest thing to do for a student with average expectations. I also watched my nephew play a year on Karl Dorrell's offensive line, so I have a glimpse of the expectations placed on student athletes. These young people live their life under a microscope and carry the weight of our (alumni) expectations. All I can say is I sincerely hope Mr. Hasiak returns to uphold the expectation of excellence that comes with being a member of the UCLA community. We could use his help right now.

p.s. Jon, you seem to be settling in nicely. Welcome to the fray!

Young Mr. Hasiak: you are part of the UCLA family. Take your time kid. your coaches and the fans are behind you. pretty much every person opining on this blog went through some personal business that needed attention in their yrs 18-21, so taking a little time to get your stuff back on track is no big deal. anyway, you will still have 3 years of bashing Trojans left to enjoy.

WTF is wrong with this kid? He's acting like some rebel without a cause. He's shooting himself in the foot. Sounds like he has some serious emotional issues to deal with. Chris Foster is reporting that there have been several anger management issues with Stan. Including, picking fights with several teammates during live scrimmages and an over aggressive attitude and behavior. Here is the story:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-ucla-football-fyi11-2009nov11,0,3741429.story

First we were told it was a "personal health issue" and now just "personal issues". Sounds like some BS HR e-mail statement. John, do you know what is really going on? Are there any reports of this type of behavior in HS?

We have to remember that as physically impressive as these guys might seem, they sometimes don't have the mental toughness. I hope the staff worked with him to get these issues resolved and didn't just throw him under the rug. Maybe student mental health services could have helped him out.

Some kids have a tough time adjusting to College and the pressures. I remember several people trying to commit suicide my Freshman year. I hope he works this stuff out. However, leaving school is usually not a good sign of somebody coming back. LA Times had reported he was back in LA, but not with the team.

I remember watching him on the sidelines close to the end of the Tennesse game, in a heated contest, and he was just standing there with a blank look on his face yawning. As if he was out of it or disinterested in what was going on, on the field. I thought that was quite strange and posted on here about it. I'm usually a good read of people and personalities, and I thought it was odd.

It's honestly none of our business what the issue is. It's sad that these kids are under such a microscope in the internet age...I can't say how I would have handled this kind of scrutiny at 18 years old, I had enough trouble adjusting to life at UCLA just dealing with my own expectations let alone a team, coaching staff, fan base and media. No way that is easy to deal with.

Hopefully he can find what works best for him and if that means leaving football behind, then so be it.

Anger management issues are usually a sign of other psychological/emotional issues that need urgent attention. These issues are usually related to depression/anxiety and can impact enormously on the sufferer. Stan needs professional help and will, hopefully, respond favorably to treatment. Our thoughts and prayers should be with him. Please forego the snide comments.

Take as long as you need to get your mind right, Stan! We're all rooting for you.

Of course the elephant in the room that no one is discussing is the classroom. Maybe he just couldn't cut it in the booklearning department.

If a football player has trouble with classes in the fall, when they take basket weaving 101, then they sure as hell aren't going to cut it in the winter when they take tougher classes.

Could this be Stan's problem?

It's obvious all the losing has taken its toll on the kid.

Stan should take as much time as he needs to cope with whatever he is dealing with. When he's ready to come back, I hope to see him on the football field. If not, I wish him the best in whatever direction life takes him. I'm rooting for you Stan

If these are clinically diagnosed emotional/psychological issues, can Stan still redshirt if he played in 3 games or less?

if he's that angry and wants to hit someone? put him on Defense....

Hey Anon, why don't you get an account and sign in?

I'm not being negative. Read the whole post. I'm being a realist. Did I not say I hope the staff got him help? Did I not say I hope he went to student mental health services and ot help? Did I not say I hope he works this stuff out? What part of that was negative?

I'm rooting for the kid too. I hope he comes back soon, but until we get better information I'm not holding my hopes up.

How is one anonymous nickname any different from another? If I was "BruinWahoo", would I be any less anonymous?

::What part of that was negative?

It was every bit is as negative as I was when I said I wasn't holding my breath on the Colorado RB ending up here, for which you accused me of being unduly negative (notwithstanding the fact that I proved to be correct).

BruinFaithful Author Profile Page said:

Anon @ 6:12:

Exactly, if you didn't tell me you were that Anon, how would I know? Having a sign in name creates credibility in the form of consistency and liability. Your comments and their history can be tied to your screen name. It is very difficult to keep up with all the Anon's and they are not credible. I notice that most of the rude, disparaging, and outlandish comments come from Anons. The fact that they are Anon allows them to do so. There is no way for Jon or the techs to track and ban Anons.

I also remember your comments regarding Scott being tied to academics. Your reasoning for Scott not coming was completely different than what actually transpired. You were correct in him not coming, but not why. He wanted to come, we decided not to reciprocate the interest.

So, now you're being a child by calling me negative, because I did so to you regarding your Scott comments? Grow up.
