SWEEEEEEEEET! your big recruiting news break and its a great one Jon! We heart you!

Great news! But it's a long way 'til Signing Day; I'll get excited when the LOI is received.

KABOOM! I feel an earth quake coming. A five start recruit is about to land in our laps. I will however believe it when I hear it. Come on down Jones.

I agree with PowerKegBlue. Great recruit, but I will feel a lot better with the LOI in hand. However, I spoke with a co-worker who has 2 sons playing D-1 football, as did he, and he said that players who commit now rather than REALLY early usually don't change their minds!!

Jon,

Love the blog, but don't steal a kids thunder or developing those recruiting contacts will be tough. Say he is leaning or you think he will be a Bruin, but let the kid announce.

Love the blog.

CLAP YOUR HANDS, NOW, OH YE' CHILDREN! CLAP YOUR HANDS, TONIGHT!!!

Yeah, baby!!! This is a HUGE HUGE HUGE get for us. We finally have our playmaker who will take the team on his back like Maurice Drew did in 2005!

GO BRUINS! DUMP THE DUCKS!!

Anonymous said:

Let The kid announce on his own. You are doing well but still have a lot to learn Jon.

Good job coach! the 2010 class looks pretty good.

Anonymous @ 9:13: Shut up. BD used to tell us all the time before recruits even announced. Where were you then?

MaltBaa Author Profile Page said:

anonymous,
announcements are mere formalitlies. Jon did nothing wrong. It is afterall his job to report the news as quickly as possible. I believe he was also the first to break thr news, so congratulate him.

Anonymous said:

im pretty sure gold would've checked to make sure with his source that it was ok for him to make it public....but anyway great news jon! keep it comin!

Jewin Author Profile Page said:

We constantly hound Jon for recruiting info, and as soon as he announces major news, you jump all over him for reporting it too early? Give me a break.

By the way, Tracy Pierson of BRO reported the same thing this morning, before Malcolm officially announced (although Jon scooped him). Are you going to tell Tracy he has a lot to learn too?

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

told you this earlier in the week, and again last night. suck it.

bruinbiochem06 Author Profile Page said:

Hell Yeah! This just made my day. Thanks for reporting it first Jon Gold!

Evaluation from ESPN:

Jones is not an overly flashy back, but he is the type of strong, downhill runner who can carry the load and wear down a defense by the fourth quarter. He is tall with a very compact, thickly-built frame. For a taller back, he really runs with great leverage and body lean. He does not show great urgency out of his stance or quickness attacking the hole, but he will consistently square up his shoulder pads and get downhill. Jones displays deceptively light feet for his size, picking and darting through traffic while staying square and slicing through the cutback lanes. For Jones' size, he jump-cuts and sidesteps traffic well. Displays good body control aided by his low center of gravity and good base. He flashes great strength, particularly through his lower-body, and excellent balance and lean bouncing off initial contact. Jones does not stop his thick legs from churning when wrapped up, and he consistently finishes runs and breaks out of the pile. However, he is more of a one-speed back with better-than-adequate top-end speed. He is not going to separate from faster defensive backs at the next level. He lacks some suddenness and burst out of his cuts between the tackles, but Jones is the type of runner who will get stronger with more carries and wear you down. His recruiting stock is raised with the ability he flashes at linebacker. His range, shedding strength, good athleticism and ball skills in coverage may get him some looks on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker. Especially if he continues to physically develop once he arrives on campus.

IF TRUE, then Congratulations to the Bruins on the recruitment of this young man. Per all the reports on the Internets, this young man is deserving of a football scholarship.

Jon has to report news like this, or other publications will beat him to the punch. Thanks for the breaking news Jon. Now bring on the DT's!

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

btw, not only did I tell you this before Jon, I'll also tell you that we have at least 2 other "major" recruits who will announce this month.

MJD Lite said:

Sweet news to start the day. Has anyone verified that Jon was first to break the story? That would be pretty cool.

And these kids love that newspaper writers care so much about their careers that they break stories for them. A little better than committing and getting no attentio

northbaybruin Author Profile Page said:

Great news ! Welcome to UCLA Mr. Jones ! Are the Bruins coming together, or what ! Great coverage, Jon.

JEEZ said:

Ok, spedjones; you want to get credit?

Call out the other two "major" recruits now...

Anonymous said:

Yea Boi!!! Hopefully Ward's next!

Anonymous said:

he's not a five-star, to whomever suggested her was, but he's definitely a huge success for our recruiting class. He's in the ESPN Top 150, and considered anywhere between the #5 and #8. Rivals lists him as a 5 star, but scout, ESPN, and a few others list him as a 4 star. Either way, this is a great recruit. It's also great to see us getting talent out of California again, like the good ol' days.

Just heard on Jime Rome that Coach Rick will be on Jim Rome is Burning at 1:30 today on ESPN.

maybe spedjones should start his own blog?

Oh, you mean nobody cares about what he has to say...my bad...

Fantastic news! Welcome to the Bruin family, Mr. Jones!

Anonymous said:

CRN won't be able to say anything about Mr. Jones as this would be a violation without a signed LOI.

Jon said:

Don't bash Jon Gold for doing a great job! It is his job to bring us this type of announcement. You have to pay for this kind of scoop!

Keep up the good work Mr. Gold.

Jewin Author Profile Page said:

Hey Anon 11:36,

Scout actually DOES list him as a 5-star.

Anonymous said:

Wow, you're not a 5-star unless ESPN says so. A True Bruin would choke trying to say that.

Anon said:

This guy has "BUST" written all over him.

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

take it for what it's worth, but I've heard Christian Thomas and the kid from Virginia. Ward will, of course, follow later in the season now.

uclaproflee Author Profile Page said:

Great news for sure, but I want to hear the official announcement before getting too excited. Plus, we are stacked at RB. We need possession WRs and more depth on the d-line and LB corps.

I mean, that's just what I'm thinking. She's using the cutie attack combined with the obnoxious attack. If only she had blinking words. I can almost hear the music.

Jess A. Phan Author Profile Page said:

Congratulations both to UCLA and to Mr. Jones. A commitment from a tailback of this caliber emphatically attests to the terrific start the Bruin coaches have enjoyed in beginning to build a dominant O-line. And any student-athlete who narrows his choice to Stanford or UCLA speaks volumes about the high priority he places on a great academic experience.

Anonymous said:

I've heard he projects more as a LB in college than a RB. Wasn't USC recruiting him as a FB/LB only?

dino said:

This is a really nice "get" in the recruiting battles and should bode well for the rest of the class, as well as hopefully establishing a nice pipeline to Oaks Christian.

However, I don't see Malcolm Jones being a star in the Pac-10. He's too slow and lumbering. He's got a great O-line in high school, which simply dominates all those small division III schools that Oaks plays against. In the Pac-10, he won't have those advantages. Nevertheless, he seems like a very good overall addition to the program for all the other things he brings to the table.

CalGirl,

Please don't lock me out of our tree house again. I was home late because some people on Campus mistook me for a DUCK and just laid down in front of me. On the way home I found a used TrOJan next to some syringes. I brought it home hoping to BANG you, but I know how much you love letting PUSC score on you.

Good thing you have a Bi this week, it will give you time to shave your BEAVER. After that, get ready to go down to Pasadena and find out what some real teDDies look like. Yours look small and kind of boyish. Then, the COUGARS come to town, so your Sasquatch ass might actually have a shot at scoring.

P.S. leave your backdoor open next time

Great job Spedjones:

Maybe when your done jerking yourself off, CalGirl can help finish you. You however never substantiated your call, sourced it, nor claimed who he would commit.

Get off the recruiting boards and bring something if substance.

spedjones Author Profile Page said:

actually, I claimed he DID commit the night before Jon announced (go check the posts). Also, while a bit off on timing, I also called Ward above and what do you know...?
