About Dominique Johnson's transfer

| | Comments (10) |

UCLA receiver Dominique Johnson is transferring, and I hear Portland State is one of the possibilities. A move to a bowl-subdivision school is unlikely because Johnson would have to sit out one year because of transfer rules, meaning a school would have to put him on scholarship for two years, but get only one season out of him.
But if he goes to a playoff-subdivision school, he has to sit out the first two games of the upcoming season as a penalty for playing in the first game of his freshman season.
For regaining a red-shirt season after playing in the waning moments of the opener as a freshman, the NCAA stipulated Johnson had to sit out the first two games during his next three seasons. The 2009 season is his third season since then.

He caught ucla's one TD against USC at the Coliseum 2 seasons ago. Nice to see his "talent" will be appreciated at another program.

He has NFL type talent and his departure really means some of the other WR's have to step up. If spring practice was any indication, other receivers just are not ready to do so.

If in fact Neuheisel did show him the door, which in itself is debatable, the move has to be questioned because even with his inconsistent practice habits, he was a consistent performer on Saturdays, when it counted.

Also something interesting to note, R. Neueheisel was quoted as saying along the lines of D. Johnson was motivated to leave in hopes of going closer to his family. Moreno Valley is in the IE, about an hour and 15-20 min away from UCLA. Just interesting in my mind.

I may be wrong, but I thought his family was moving elsewhere & DJ was going to try to get closer to wherever that is.

Not only did Dominique make that circus catch against SC two years ago, but last year threw a TD against the Trojans at the Rose Bowl. So leaves UCLA's most effective offensive player against Trojans over the past two seasons. Whatever that is worth.

And too bad. I thought he had turned the corner at the end of last season when it appeared he was putting forth more effort and doing a better job with the opportunities he had. But it seems he must have regressed in the off season to old habits.

Man dude could play. Whatever, we don't see what goes on behind closed doors, DJ must be a real slacker or have grade issues. Oh well hopefully Rosario steps up as the go to guy in the redzone. Presley will be a weapon too.

Terrance Austin and Taylor Embree will do a fine job next season. We also have the fastest high schooler in California incoming as a receiver. I don't think this is a big deal at all.

Very sad that DJ could not make it in our system. I do believe this is definitely a teething period for Coach Rick and his staff. They're weeding out the avocados from the apples, not that the avocados are bad they just don't seem to fit, and then in 2-3 years' time, Rick will have his full basket of ripe, shiny, juicy apples. Gotta have faith, folks. The good times are comin'.

Obviously most of you base your perceptions of DJ on Sportscenter highlights. The only 2 highlights in this kids career are stated above. A trick play pass that floated so long the defender nearly cought up to the play and the circus catch against SC that most people remember was Dorrell's last game. (thank goodness)
If you really watch the games and watch the players perform on the field you could see this kid struggle to get open and drop balls on multiple occasions. For gods sake I think he dropped 3 balls in the BYU game last year alone. That trumps a couple good plays over an entire career I'd say. NFL talent.....Consistant on Saturdays? I dont know what the heck you were watching but I was at the Rose Bowl for every one of this kids home games and several road games to boot and unless you are DJ's father you must not have seen him play.
I wish him the best at his next program but we are not loosing a great receiver period. Its incredible how some of you are such incredible judges of talent.......much better than Chow and CRN

Not everything you hear in the media is true... Their jobs are to build stories and get you people talking. Could it be possible that DJ just wasn't in the right system and did not agree with everything being said or done? None of us really know what goes on behind the cameras in the program but it's quite funny how these issues only began coming up in the media after Dorrell was let go. Every player does not fit in every system with every staff. It happens everywhere. Regardless best of luck to DJ!

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
