Night Owl Special
I wrote a story for Wednesday's paper on the running backs, and from talking to coaches and various sources, the pecking order at the top is already in place.
Christian Ramirez, despite a nagging hamstring injury, is the leader to be UCLA's first-string running back and Derrick Coleman is second.
Johnathan Franklin and Chase Moline are battling for the third spot followed by Milton Knox, Raymond Carter and Andre Dean.

Chane Moline? Is there still talk about him (and Coleman) playing fullback? If not who are likely to be the fullbacks?
There are going to be a lot of unhappy Bruins comes June. I see some transfers coming, if this is in fact the pecking order.
I am still surprised that Ramirez is number 1. Nonetheless the competition at the position will determine the order.
I hope Dean and Knox get reps in practice. They are good.
With all the rb depth we have this year, how does Moline even get to see the field? I've never seen in him what the coaches apparently do. His two speeds are slow and slower.
i think everyone was hoping for those 5th, 6th, and 7th place guys to emerge.
those first 4 names... i dunno maybe im just trippin or in a twilight zone or something, i dunno, im just... i dont know, i have no comment.
come on CRN those first 4 guys were the ones who carried the rock last year! look where it got us. this is the difference between us Bruins & suc across town. they play their frosh and make their older guys battle them to keep a position. those younger guys should definitley be giving main priority this spring! why else would you have recruited them. all the posters seem to agree with this
If Ramirez is number one, we're in trouble. I can't believe Dean and Knox aren't higher on the list.
It is still early in spring practice. Maybe Dean or Knox will forge ahead.
Albert,
UCLA's running woes had nothing to do with its running backs. The offensive line was awful.
As for Ramirez being the guy, I don't think it is a bad move. I have liked Ramirez's running style since he set foot on campus, but an array of things happened to keep him from getting a real chance.
Brian,
How do you explain all of the hamstring injuries when the conditioning program is supposed to be upgraded?
Is the pecking order indicative of running ability or a combo of running and being able to catch the ball out of the backfield?
Let them transfer- its not like they'll see the field anyway...
I think the pecking order has a lot to do with the ability to block. It's been said before that Dean was having problems with it last year. I'm sure size, spped, and ability to catch are all factors, but if they can't block, I don't think CRN is going to let them play much.
I like Ramirez' running style, too. Kinda reminds me of Eric Dickerson.
The one that is surprising is Dean. I was hearing so much about him, and it seems he is irrelevant.
Moline is also surprising. I figured the only time he would see the field was 3rd and inches, 4th and inches.
What is wrong with some of you? I have complete faith in Neuheisel's ability to determine who is the best starter. If Knox and Dean are not doing so well as Ramirez and Coleman, then they need to try harder! It is not a right, that Dean and Knox have, to be the starter; that is to be determined in practice. Some of you should put more faith in the coaches ability to do his job and stop trying to be armchair coaches.
Well said devildog, well said Jerzey.
Here's the deal: In today's single-back pro style sets, there is no more important job for the back than picking up the blitz. None. If the back cannot recognize the blitz & make the correct block so the quarterback may get extra time to deliver the ball, then the back simply does not play. You want to know why Moline (straight ahead Fred) is in the mix? He blocks! You want to know whay Aundre Dean's name was at the end of that list? He doesn't block! Aundre's been going with the "Ole!," technique popularized by Spanish Matadors...entertaining in a bullfight, bad idea in a football game. Running the ball is important, but blocking is the essence of football.
