Neuheisel on the OL

| | Comments (9) |

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel was asked about the progress of the offensive line.
"I think (JUCO transfer) Ryan Taylor is going to be a good player,'' he said. "I think that Jeff Baca is going to be a good inside player. And I think that (Colorado transfer) Kai Maiava, as he learns, will become a steady guy inside.
"We still need more from (Nate) Chandler, still need more from (Micah) Kia. Not that I'm down on them, I just think we can get more out of them. They're athletic enough to be better than they're performing right now. And then I also am very enchanted with (Sean) Sheller, with the way that he's working. We're developing, and you know what, Sonny Tevaga has done some nice things."

I am getting so tired of the scholarship question being asked. For the hundredth time, if it comes to it, scholarships are renewable each year. If it comes to that situation, I'm sure the coaches will be able to make cuts accordingly. Are you really worried that the coaches will get to season and say, "oops, we have too many players on scholarship"?

Brian, can you make a post or something in big capital letters explaining this? Apparently answering it in your Q & A is insufficient for some people to get the picture.

Not to be cruel but it won't take a lot to show improvment. Last year we were terrible

So snide and yet so ignorant. The above has nothing to do with HOW the scholarship logistics work. Are you following along? The question isn't whether we can actually find scholarships. Of course the coaches will find them. The question has to do with WHO UCLA is not going to re-up. You know, kinda like what you said, "I'm sure the coaches will be able to make cuts accordingly." Last year, Tevaga was one of those players. If you recall last year...Coach Rick had to give Shannon a mid-life-crisis-like lecture on the need to become passionate about football. Seems to have worked for at least this year, because now good things are being said about good ol Shannon. Maybe Tevaga doesn't wind up being on the cutting block...good for him, but the question becomes then...who.
Next time you decide to speak before you think, I suggest you keep silent.

(1) It's Sonny, not Shannon. Shannon graduated 2 years ago.

(2) Last year, we barely had enough live bodies to man an offensive line, let along a good one. This year, we can simply cut players who are buried on the depth chart.

(3) I'm sorry if you meant something other than what I understood, however it seems like this question has been asked a million times. The answer that Brian has stressed is that this will all sort itself out by the time the season begins, so don't worry about it.

i cant wait to see what the freshmen will do too. that was a marque moment for this regime i think, when x-man filo put that ucla cap on! is that how it happened, i blacked-out through the thing? LOL!

him and hasiak are gonna make things fun. but im also interested to see what abele can do, altho not many stars to his name, i think the coaches were high on him, if im not mistaken, and stars can be so misleading...

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
