Answers, Part II
Don't forget, UCLA hoops plays at Oregon State tonight, and I will host a chat beginning at 7:25 p.m. Tip-off is 7:35 p.m.
Now, here is the second set of answers:
Outside of Cedric Bozeman, James Keefe has to be the most confusing player I have ever seen at UCLA. He had a plethora of moves in high school, yet never attempts anything but threes in college. Is his play as confounding to you and Howland as it is me?
I don't find it confusing. He is 6-foot-8 and had a size advantage over many kids in high school. He is an ok player, but I never thought he was a can't-miss NBA prospect who could dominate in college. He is a roll player. If he had killer moves to take advantage of, UCLA would run some plays for him to exploit that.
How many schalorships does UCLA have left to give out for the 2009 football recruiting class???
By my count UCLA has 11.
Think this has been covered before but, what is the deal with that guy at Pauley who screams when the other team shoots free throws? He sounds like Richard Simmons.
I'm guessing the Richard Simmons comment was a shot at the gentleman, which I find despicably insensitive. I think you should read this and become educated.
If Matt Barkley of Mater Dei decommitted from USC and wanted to go to UCLA, do you think UCLA would take him and drop Brehaut, take them both, or decline his interest?
If a bag of gold coins fell out of the sky and landed on my head, would it bounce to the left or right, and would the bag break? It's 2009, are we going to start the new year off with hypothetical questions?
Over/Under of 90 degree angles on Ken Norton's head?
Not sure, but not as many as he has Super Bowl and Rose Bowl rings.
Happy New Year. What is your best information about Chuck Bullough and/or Todd Howard joining DeWayne Walker in Las Cruces. Also, if either or both don't, what have you heard about either or both remaining on the staff for 2009?
I don't see it because of salary, and the move down a level or two. For Walker, it was a move up. Even being a coordinator at New Mexico State would be a move down, or laterally, in my opinion. I could see both returning to the NFL. As far as both remaining on staff, I don't know at this point. I would be surprised because I think a new coordinator would want to bring in his own guys, but we shall see.
In football, do you think (off/def) coordinators have a big impact on recruiting, or is it more about the head coach and school?
The coordinators have a huge impact on recruiting. Assistant coaches are the ones who build many of the relationships with the prospects, and the head coach usually wows the player and closes the sale. When I talk to kids, they are constantly talking about the ability to play for the coordinators, and often mention them before the head coach.
Can you use a new word to describe high school kids who are verbally "committed" to a university? Maybe they have "pledged" or "intend" to go to a particular school, but it cheapens the word "commitment" when it's broken so freely.
No. It is a commitment. Marriage seems to be broken so freely in today's society, so once you get that term changed, I will consider changing the "commitment " usage.
I'm not asking who will be our next DC, but who would YOU go after for our next DC?
I don't know. I haven't thought about it since I was on vacation. But it would be someone with strong ties to Los Angeles, particularly the inner city.

This is

I asked the question about the man who screams during free throws. I was wrong to have not done my research before making such a remark. I apologize to Brian and anyone else who may have been offended.
"strong ties to Los Angeles, particularly to the inner city,"
Sounds like a veiled attempt to woo Ken Norton Jr.
Dohn Corleone's last answer = Ken Norton, Jr. or Eric Scott. Cheers.
LAWYER JOHN
Eric Scott??? lol
look, i understand that guy that yells at free throws is disabled and he appears to be a huge UCLA fan, but he looks ridiculous and the yelling is incredibly annoying. his condition alone shouldn't mean that we are happy that he's there and so prominent. that's PC run amok. he clearly has the ability to act in a dignified (yet enthusiastic) manner and he appears NOT to be making that choice.
After once again watching VA Tech play last night and with Rocky Long set at the DC at SDSU, I'd sure as heck consider the Hokies' DC - although we probably couldn't move him. I LOVE the way Beamer's teams play defense as well as special teams: they attack all the time, they are well-coached, they are in position, do all the little things right and they make plays. Maybe Rick could sell the guy on a lateral move that will gain a lot more publicity in a program that's on the rise - what is needed on his resume to take the next step professionally....
I know, I know, and clearly DeWayne Walker got a TON out of his guys and was/is a terrific DC so no negative on his defenses at all, but I would LOVE to see Ucla play defense like the Hokies do - against pro-style AND spread offenses - like DeWayne Walker's Ds did in the bowl game against BYU and in the 13-9 win over Sc - with attitude and attacking all the time.
bruin fan,
Yes, how annoying... I much prefer the rest of the old-farts at Pauley who cheer about as much as people do at a funeral. How dare one person try to make excessive noise and give our team a home court advantage.
Well, "bruin fan" I know this dude may seem annoying to you but after spending the day at the Rose Bowl yesterday and having to wade through a sea of ketchup and mustard (and white Zinfandel)-drenched Trojan hacks, it's good to know that there are still zealous UCLA supporters out there who don't care what anyone else thinks, they still love the Bruins...it's not about being PC, it's about having some compassion and giving the dude a break...
Bruin_67...apology accepted. Bruin Fan? Seriously, do you think the Cameron Crazies are doing the same thing? Fanatical fans are what we need MORE of! More fans like that and less people with their a$$e$$ stuck the seats would make the place better in my opinion!
bruin fan, I go to a lot of the basketball games and we should all be cheering like that guy that seems to annoy you so much. My 15 year old son and I (it's always nice when we see you and are able to say hello after the game Brian) yell at the top of our lungs every time an opponent steps to the free throw line. That makes us, the six year old girl who sits about 3 seats down, and Mark along with a handful of others in Pauley that make any noise at all. We should all be wearing blue wigs and jumping up and down and yelling our heads off. That would make our home court intimidating to visiting teams. To be honest, right now, unless you consider being stared at in virtual silence intimidating, Pauley just isn't. It would be great if everyone could cheer like Mark. My son and I do. People look at us like we're crazy sometimes. For Heaven's sake, it's a college basketball game, not a museum exhibit. How in the world can a fan (a loyal fan) yelling at a basketball game annoy you?
Mark Kowal is a wonderful person. He has a true spirit, optimism and energy about him. He's the most loyal of UCLA fans, too. When I'm at games, he'll always come by to say hello, then he'll ask for the opposing team's free-throw percentage. We can all learn a lot from him.
Didn't know the fellow's name, but I have had dealings with him as well. I have sat on the floor a couple of times, once very near him, and I was surprised at his antics. But he came over to talk to me even though I was wearing an SC sweatshirt, and was very nice. I think he liked how I humorously razzed the bruin faithful (we think we're pretty funny even though noone in the bruin brain trust gets it).
He actually is much nicer than over 90% of the people at Pauley, but then, that is not much of a stretch: West L.A. people, if you know what I mean.
LJ
Sure he looks silly, but better than most of the old timers that just there quitely.
Pauley is not the most lively, so at least some is there with spirit.
"He actually is much nicer than over 90% of the people at Pauley, but then, that is not much of a stretch: West L.A. people, if you know what I mean."
I don't live in WLA, but I just had to point out the irony of a person whose education took place in the armpit of LA calling out the people who reside in one of the best parts of Southern California.
Thanks for the story on Mr. Kowal - what an inspiration! I love watching him yelling when the other team is shooting free throws, but I didn't realize just how much he has overcome.
Come on, Brian. "Despicably" insensitive? Obviously, the guy didn't know of this fan's condition. Geez - I think he feels bad enough.
I will kill anyone who talks bad about Kowal! Kowal is a pal to the UBTA, and he is a die-hard Bruin! He shows up at more games than probably half you losers on here. And he stays for the ENTIRE GAME.
There is a pic of Kowal with the UBTA on www.ultimatebruin.com
DON'T MESS WITH THE KOWAL!!!
"Despicably" insensitive? Oh yeah, it's the guy's fault that he hadn't read some online story and made a comment about a guy's voice based on hearing him sporadically on TV. That's something that really deserves to be called out with harsh words.
If Bruin_67 is found dead we know who to start with...
