QB coming early

UCLA commit Richard Brehaut, a quarterback from Los Osos of Rancho Cucamonga High, is going to try and graduate early and enroll at UCLA for the spring quarter. That is a huge deal because it will allow Brehaut to compete in spring practice.

Although Craft seems to be improving, it will be nice to try and groom a quarterback from freshman year till senior year like Washington did with Jake Locker. Hopefully Brehaut ends up being what he is touted to be.

That is good news. I was impressed with the tape available on this kid, great feet, strong arm.
He has all the the physical tools necessary to be a great QB. Throw in some time with Mr. Chow, an improved O-line, some great young receivers and maybe, just maybe, we will have an offense so fun to watch, no one would think of doing the wave while they are on the field.

GO BRUINS!! FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!

Do they try and start a Freshamn QB next year?

Bruin2k3 Author Profile Page said:

If Craft turns out to be servicable, why not RS Brehaut? He'd still have 4 years after that.

sandiegobruinfan Author Profile Page said:

If Craft continues to progress and improve over the season, it will take a lights-out performance by Brehaut, Prince, or anyone for that matter to unseat him next year. That said, the QB position has been hit with the injury bug the last couple of years so never say never.

Craft doesn't have a legit D-1 arm.

VB said:

Neither do you...

Craft is a very good backup and not much more. If Brehaut comes in next spring and performs like the best QB on the roster, he should start. UCLA is not Oklahoma or LSU, the team really cannot afford to redshirt it's most talented players. Let Brehaut play and grow with the skill players recruited in last year's class. Then, UCLA will stand a good shot at competing in 2010 and 2011.

I love the enthusiasm that Brehaut has shown about becoming a Bruin and doing whatever he can to help the team, such as talking to unsigned recruiting targets and enrolling early. I hope he makes it to spring practice so he can start learning the offense and bonding with his teammates ASAP. Craft is getting better each week, but the team needs as many QBs as possible in case of injury.

If he does come in early, I hope the coaches and team handle it better than they did with Losman.

How come everyone is so quick to list Brehaut at the #1 guy when he gets to UCLA? Crissman (9 scout) was just as highly ranked out of high school and Forcier (19 scout) wasn't too far behind.
How come everyone seems to think Brehaut is just going to walk in and jump right over these guys?

Good point BruinBurd. I don't believe Scout's ratings are extremely reliable, but it is interesting that you have these highly-rated guys throughout the country who regularly get passed up by lower-ranked recruits. Let's be real, there is a HUGE difference between D1/Pac10 football and high school or junior college. Just because Brehaut is ranked high (or Craft, Crissman, Forcier, etc) doesn't mean he'll be a star. It drives me nuts to see all these fans acting like he's going to jump straight from high school to the pros. Come on people, you all said the same thing about the other quarterbacks (remember Olson was ranked #1 in the country). It makes you feel good to have a highly-ranked recruit, but BE REAL--let's not crown him starter before he takes a snap in practice. And stop saying Brehaut is Chow's "chosen one"--Chow "chose" countless recruits at BYU who turned out to be average at best.

The reason why Brehaut should be see as the #1 over Forcier and Crissman is simple; he was hand picked by Norm Chow. Please forgive me, but I tend to trust Norm Chow's opinon more than Karl Dorrell's, Jay Norvell's or Jim Svoboda's.

VB said:

Olsen, Crissman and Forcier were Dorrell recruits. Brehaut is a Norm Chow recruit. Who would you play?

Scout's rankings are unreliable. Rivals is slightly better imo.

Forcier was a questionable QB from the start. He was an incredible athlete who dominated a weak league in HS. Crissman has strange mechanics and is very behind on reading coverages and making decisions. Brehaut is much more advanced than Forcier and Crissman when it comes to passing and he's got leadership and other intangibles.

Craft is a backup type QB. A weak arm and still makes shaky decisions...its only a matter of time(competition) before he's exposed more.

I definitely don't want to downplay Brehaut, but let's give Crissman and Forcier and Prince their fair shake. They are all Bruins.
Glad to see the team play pretty well this week. Oregon can be beat..let's keep supporting Craft.
Go Bruins!

Like I have said all along, you could have Tom Brady at the helm. He aint gonna do much with the protection our O'line doesn't give.

BruinBurd Author Profile Page said:

I agree with VB's Tom Brady comment, but still...Moya, Coleman, A. Dean, Embree...They were all Dorrell recruited guys too and everyone seems pretty excited about them. They are performing pretty well. Not too many freshman can come in and be lights out. Look at ND and Clausen...UCLA needs to work him in slowly and develop him. Not throw him into the fire. We all know this is a building process. There is not an instant fix.

ill take your bet and see if you can get tom brady to play for us, i bet they would do ALOT better with the same o-line.

p.s. a healthy tom brady, not the current tom brady.

First of all, my cat knows how to spell. He would never spell "worms" with a "z." Secondly, that worm treatment we gave him lasts for a while. There is no way he infected again. Nice try you imposter!

I guess that VB and I can agree on one thing.

Craft doesn't have a strong arm but does have a sufficient D1 arm for this offense and his decision-making continues to get better. Barring an injury this year or a significant drop in his quality of play & management of the offense, a full year as a starter in Chow's system gives Craft a significant advantage over Brehaut and others.
