Prepping for the Vols

Here is the notebook I wrote that was in today's paper. Also, I will have the depth charts, as witnessed from practice, posted later today.
And one quote I didn't use in the paper was this comment from UCLA defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker, explaining whey so much of the defense was put in during training camp.
"If you just start putting in new stuff after training camp, the players are like, 'What? We don't know this stuff. Now, we have to learn all new calls,' " Walker said. "I don't think that's smart. And I knew we would have some young kids playing -- like Rahim (Moore), Datone (Jones), (Courtney) Viney and (Akeem) Ayers -- so when he you make those calls, they know them."

This will be a year to find out who are the true Bruin fans.

I think that it is quite likely that our Bruins will fail to win any of the three non-conference games (the best shot is a close game against Fresno State).

I'll be rooting for my alma mater this year as well as in future years, but I think a projection of 6 wins this year is perhaps overly optimistic.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that injuries are at a minimum and we can at least be respectable this year.

The Dorrell years were the ultimate test of all rational Bruins fans.

If the Bruins don't win at least six this year I'll be surprised, disappointed, and vocal.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
