Q&A time

Here is the story I wrote for today's paper on Nate Chandler moving from tight end to offensive line.
Also, and I almost forgot, it's Q&A time. Send in some Q's by 8 a.m. Friday, and I will provide the A's throughout the day.

Does the move of Chandler to offensive tackle reflect that the coaching staff is not confident that either Harris or Bennett have the ability to become adequate starters at the tackle position?

Was it uncommon when Neuheisel picked out most of the offensive coaches before he got chow as the offensive cord. wouldn't an off. cord. want input on the coaches that will work under him? thanks

What is UCLA doing to recruit the DT spot? This is always a tough position to recruit at UCLA, so what is the staff doing in such a down year? Any prospects you can name?

two questions, one in regards to the football program: which positions would you say are showcasing our strongest talent (obviously not our o-line) and which positions will be most strongly suited in the near future? basketball question: with the 2010 ncaa one and done rule fast approaching are you aware of which players we're currently recruiting or will enter into ucla scholarship who may or may not be affected by a move to a two-year mandatory collegiate or european waiting period prior to entering the nba?

Does the offer to Anthony Stover mean that Howland is losing confidence that he'll get Alex Stephenson? Will the Stover offer have an impact on Stpehenson's decision? Or do neither one have any impact on the other???

Brian, you noted in the 7x7's that Moutra is now being double covered. Since the Coaches can't be in attendance at these 'voluntary' workouts, who call the plays? The QB's? And who calls the defenses? Who decides that a Moutra would be doubled?

GBruin said:

so the truly burning question of the day...who has the better song girls? Rutgers or UCLA!

Tell me if I am wrong but for any for any football team you need athletes and considering Nate Chandler fits that mold where he grew out of his position. Will his T.E abilities translate well to O.L and become one of the few great surprises and how would you describe his body type?

BruinFanInLA said:

All the recent articles about UCLA football have focused on the Offense and Defense. What about the special teams? Is it just a given that they're set in that department? Also, there is talk about players to watch out for and the strengths of the team. Why doesn't anyone ever mention any of the special teams? I recall last year the special teams won quite a few games for the team.

Brian, I really appreciate you keeping us informed on the latest and greatest (sometimes not so great) wrt UCLA. I haven't heard much on Aundre Dean wrt 7 on 7s, is that b/c these drills are geared more towards corners, receivers, and qbs? What goes on in the 7 on 7s? Also, you mentioned Jonathan Franklin showed good speed. Does he look like he has the size to contribute early at running back (I heard he's put on significant mass)? Thanks again.

Hey Brian, can you help us solve the mystery? Recruiting sites listed Chandler at 6'6" as you did in your article. The UCLA website lists him at 6'3". Did you pull his height from a site or do you have some other numbers you are referring to? Since you get to see the players in practice would you say he is on the taller side of those numbers? Does he look like he has the size to play RT if he gains some weight?

mike04 Author Profile Page said:

With Chandler moving to RT, does this mean Harkey will not be redshirting this year? And does that also indicate the coaches' confidence in him (Harkey)? Also, does it look like Carter has lost a step from his surgery?

I read that Luc Richard Mbah a Moute signed with the Bucks. What does a 2nd rounder "signing" entail? Does it guarantee anything for the player? I know Luc was looking for a guaranteed contract even in the 2nd round. Did he get that with the Bucks?

Do you think that the opportunity for immediate playing time will be a major factor in Stover's selection of a college? If so, is UCLA likely to be significantly disadvantaged because Morgan and Gordon were signed in the prior class?

Has Ben Olson participated in any 7 on 7s yet? Has he participated in anything remotely strenuous? How's he performing in your and/or the coaches' opinion? Or would you/they say he is being outperformed?

You have mentioned that Coach Neu was used to recruiting later at his last jobs, and that recruiting is starting much sooner now. Does that mean we should see a boost in recruits coming once it gets nearer or into football season?

Also had another question. Why is it that Cal-Berkely, UCLA, UC Davis,... etc. are all part of the UC school system but they have different admissions standards? I tried to tell a friend it is harder to get into UCLA than Cal but he wondered what specifically made it harder?

Brian,

Can you preface each article with the sport that the article represents. That way we don't have to read 3/4 through the article thinking it's about one sport when it's really about another.

For example...

Basketball: Lew Acindor decides to return to grad school...

If it's too much to write out the word, how about just abbreviate. Just trying to alleviate the ambiguity in your reporting.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
