Answers, Part IV
Do we have a realistic chance with some of the out-of- staters, I mean aside from the Hawaiian lineman? Is the coaches still looking at Born as a sleeper?
In my experience covering UCLA, and I know I am only in my sixth season and the recruiting was different under Karl Dorrell, but I don't think that many out-of-state guys will jump on the Bruins until they win games and gain a profile nearly as big as USC's profile. When I answered the wait-and-see question about recruiting in an early set of answers, it was under the premise of SoCal kids, since Neuheisel said he still wants 70 percent of the class to be local.
what's the deal with the whole second-round guarantee thing? I thought the nature of second-round picks are that teams aren't obligated to offer them a contract. So even if Luc, say, gets a second-round guarantee from a mid-low 2nd round team, what's to stop another team from drafting him ahead of them and not offering him a contract? And what if the original team has a change of heart and ends up not offering a contract anyways?
In short, teams are not obligated to guarantee second-round contract, but that is what Mbah a Moute is seeking. But if your scenario plays out and he gets a second-round guarantee only to get selected by another team and then gets cut, than the team that originally ended up guaranteeing him a deal before the draft can sign him. However, when dealing with guarantees, it's dicey business, especially late in the first round and in the second round.
You have often spoken of your experience covering MLB and how it compares to the Bruin beat. SO I ask you...Johnnie O or Dellins? Tutsy or Rourke? Boby K or J Reid?
Wow, not sure who this is, but I must know you because those are interesting questions. But I'll humor you, and myself, and say Dellins, because I deal with him so much more, and he puts up with me much better. I don't really deal with Rourke, so it is Tutsy by default. And as for Bobby K or J Reid, it depends on the hour.
Is Jill interested in covering the Q&A while you are gone?
I have no idea. I suggest bringing it up when she is working the blog, and see what type of response you get.
Has Dan Guerrero or any other high level adminsrators ever talked about increasing the number of sports they support to try and get even more NCAA titles? If so, how would Title IX effect that..and which sports do you think would be the first to be introduced?
I haven't heard a word about it, but I will inquire to see what I am told.
Is UCLA one of the Pac-10 schools that are now actively pursuing Mt. San Antonio Defensive Tackle Hebron Fangupo?
He committed to USC, so I think that recruitment is done.
Not sure if you have any insight on this but why have Jordan Hamilton and Hollis Thompson not shown any interest in UCLA? Is it Play Time concerns? Wanting to get out of LA? Not wanting to play defensive Howland b-ball?
I don't think it is all a one-way street.
Do you agree with the freewheeling manner in which Scott Wolf runs his inside usc blog? He posts a lot of editorial content and does not censor his audience. This wouldnt be a bad thing but it seems to me that his style fosters a lot of tasteless behavior from his readers. Do you think it is fair to censor your readers in order to uphold your blogs integrity?
Everyone can run their blogs however they want. It is not my job (nor do I care to) judge how other people do their jobs. I run my blog the way I want, and based on the response of the readers, I think it is a successful way to do it. And I'm not saying another way is unsuccessful.
And I don't think I censor the readers. They can say whatever they want. I just ask they do it in a tasteful manner. Their message can still come across.
I understand that UCLA is still looking at additional cornerbacks to fill out this class. Is one of the reason that one of their corner recruit appears to be wavering and Notre Dame is doing a full court press on this player??
No, I am told that has nothing to do with it. There is a comfort level the coaching staff has with a certain number of players at every position, and UCLA's defensive coaches would like one more player at corner back.
What do you think of UCLA's chances of landing Lance Stephenson?
Not good, but then again, I never thought J'mison Morgan would wind up at UCLA.

Brian,
Regarding the first question in Part IV, it's really amazing that your perception of UCLA Football is based on what happened during Karl Dorrell's years as the head coach. The profile of UCLA Football is fairly rich. No, it does not have the multiple National Championships, but it does Pac-10 Championships, Rose Bowl wins, first round draft picks throughout and outstanding professional players up until the destruction started. Even Toledo, for a couple of years, was able to maintain the prestige of UCLA Football. I would suggest you review the history of UCLA Football and really study what UCLA Football was about before Dorrell brought upon it a level of mediocrity, at best, while he was the head coach. Yeah try going all the way back to the 50's and move forward. (Or did the destruction start Toledo's last couple of years and all Dorrell did was add fuel to the fire???)
You report some good stuff about UCLA on your blog, but there are times when you completely miss the mark and report things from a uninformed perspective. In this case, that’s exactly how you’ve responded.
In responding to the first comment here, I think that Brian is perfectly on point. While UCLA may have had better times before Karl Dorrell and have quite a bit of tradition going back decades, all of that is likely not that important in a high school football player's head. If I was a young player, I'd rather play for a winning program under a proven coach today, especially if I was moving halfway across the country. Kids from out of state likely won't know anything about UCLA, much less about the history, etc.
As I see it, and I'm a recent graduate, and fairly young, UCLA doesn't really have much football tradition. We're still a basketball school. And I'm almost certain any high school kid from out of state will see it the same way.
hmmmm...the "traditons" that Toledo established were: handicap parking scandal....55-7 loss to Oregon State....getting throughly punked by Ohio State in the horsebleep...horrible season ending collapses....and most of all, a rep for horrible D, dissension btwn whites and blacks on the team, and btwn O and D, and being softer than Charmin tissue.
once the BCS came into being, UCLA's mediocre commitment to CFB got completely exposed. all that stuff in the 50's means squat. (just ask Army, Navy and Yale.)
Astounding that UCLA fan is so out of touch with reality...for those thinking UCLA is a "top 15" program.
I think Dohn's should be able to run his blog as he sees fit just.
