A walk-on coming

Offensive lineman Brett Downey from Bret Harte High of Angels Camp is walking on at UCLA. He had offers from Nevada and Sacramento State, but decided to try and earn a scholarship down the line at UCLA.
He also played defensive line and made 58 tackles and had four sacks as a senior.
Here is more info about it:

I just saw an article on a FB recruit, Brett Downey, an offensive left guard, accepting a scholarship offer:

Do you know anything about him as far as how good he is, or is UCLA looking for any warm body to stick on the offensive line?

He is not a scholarship player, and my understanding is his visit to Los Angeles was unofficial. In other words, he's a walk-on. In fact, I was asked by a source the other day to keep it quiet because UCLA was trying to hide him until later this month, when he could enroll and be bound to UCLA and another school wouldn't snake in and try to scoop him up.
Since he wasn't a scholarship player, I obliged, but the cat is out of the bag.

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
