Neuheisel and 'SC video

| | Comments (10) |

A few weeks ago, while I was on vacation, there was quite a bit of chatter about UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel using the (USC assistant) Brandon Carroll walk-on video in recruiting against the Trojans.
In talking to my sources, they did not think Neuheisel used the video, or pointed it out to recruits, nor did Neuheisel tell his assistants to use the video to shed unfavorable light on the Trojans.
That said, the sources did not know if any of UCLA's assistants used the video to recruit negatively against USC.

Just curious, is one of your sources Scott Wolf? It seems it was his blog that sort of "broke" the tapegate story.

As I said, just curious.

They're the MORONS that put that incredibly stupid video on the net. How someone else uses it shouldn't be questioned.

I would expect Neuheisel to take the high road; he seems like a fair bloke.

Besides, does negativity work?-- Seems there has been an American backlash against politicians dissing their opponents. So probably not a good idea to install those tactics in your athletic program.

Moreover, that SC tape can be construed in a variety of ways, from heretical to comedic. At one point Carroll threw a horrible pass resulting in a terrible catch-attempt, and says, "Montana to Rice that wasn't."

Political campaigns use negative ads precisely because they do work. I'll look for the link to the study...

You're right in one respect- they piss people off, but they do work...

Anyone got a working link? I guess I missed that one during one of my 4 weeks of travel in the month of May. Ugh.

To be fair all the recruits who said UCLA was using it a a dirty recruiting tactic never used Neu's name. From what I understand it kind of backfired on the Bruins as the recruits were more bothered by the negative recruiting than Carroll's kid using foul language.

Sorry BRUINzor,

It's not on EDSBS, Bruins Nation, Gutty Little Bruin, Deadspin or You Tube anymore. I think it's been removed everywhere. Basically he was yelling nonsense at the walk-ons like "Whistle, whistle. I don't have a whistle so I just yell whistle" and cursing a lot. The debate was whether the players knew he was joking and if the foul language was improper or not. They're the only ones who can say for sure and I haven't heard any statements from them.

As far as dirty recruiting. The recruits who made the statements are from all over the county, take that as you will. Personally, I believe that the theory that since everyone does it then it's right - is completely wrong.

I Just Say Whistle's name is Brennan, not Brandon.
Your "sources" could also have told you that the profanity was not the negative highlight of this piece; it was the absolutely monumental ignorance of the main character and the glaringly illiterate end titles that did the trick.
This was a self-inflicted injury.
