Learning curve

It's taking a little while for the offense to come around, which is to be expected considering UCLA is installing its fourth offense in as many years. The good news is, the veteran offensive players have been through this before and know how to maintain their patience with the situation.

``It seems like every year we get a new OC and we have to learn a new offense,'' wide receiver Marcus Everett said. ``It's the same schemes and everything, just new terminology. As soon as we get the terminology down and start speaking the same language, we'll be OK.

``They (the defense) are definitely a little ahead because they've been running the same defense for about three years. Spring is kind of rough for the offense, but in the fall we're a lot better. We just have to work through it and compete every day.''

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
