Here is the fifth set:

Are you surprised at how well Dan Guerrero has done at UCLA, considering he didn’t oversee D1 basketball or football programs at UCI?
No, because he understands how the UC system works. That said, the biggest money-making program at UCLA is football, and I don’t think that has been successful under his watch.

How plausible is it that Dan Guerrero ultimately wants to be President of the NCAA, by positioning himself on several prestigious committees, and his role at UCLA is only a temporary stepping stone to replace Miles Brand?
I’ve heard that for a while, but I also think it is a ways off from happening.

How good of a baseball player was Dan Guerrero at UCLA?
No idea.

What is Bob Fields role in the football program?
He is the liaison from the football program to Guerrero.

Who is the short, stout, serious-looking man, with a gray crew cut and dressed in a suit and always holding a walkie-talkie, who ubiquitously accompanies the Bruin basketball & football teams, at home and on the road, and is first off the team bus and stands in the hotel lobby, and scans the spectators unsmiling? Is he a bodyguard or a member of the Athletic Dept?
It is Mike Dowling, who oversees everything dealing with travel and accommodations at UCLA for the football and basketball programs. He makes sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. And a great guy.

You’ve said you don’t enjoy Pro sports, why not?
I don’t recall saying I don’t enjoy pro sports. I’m a huge soccer guy, but I enjoy college sports much more because there are not as many agendas, and it isn’t all about the money at the college level. (Although money plays an important role).

About Inside UCLA

This is Brian Dohn's sixth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.
