PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Hoops update

A couple of quick things from today's hoops press conference:
--Oregon athletic director Pat Kilkenny called UCLA coach Ben Howland to apologize for the treatment Bruins big man Kevin Love and his family received during Thursday's game at Oregon.
--UCLA forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute had a CT-scan on his head, and it came back negative. He worked out for an hour Monday and his scheduled to practice today. He missed the last two games with a concussion.
--Bruins wing Michael Roll is out for at least a few more weeks with a foot injury.

This story caught my interest, having had bad experiences with Ducks' fans at Autzen, their football stadium, when SC played them.

A nice gesture on the part of the athletic director, but there is not much he can do to control kids' behavior.

Of course Love (and later O.J. Mayo) got even by having a career game. I have never understood the rationale of making opposing players mad. It seems to make them play even harder. I use reverse psychology i.e. "Oh, please, ucla, you are so much better than my team, you guys are all-world, please go easy on my guys."
