PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

ESPN's College Game Day for basketball will originate from Pauley Pavilion this Saturday. It begins at 8 a.m., but don't pack your gear just yet. UCLA is allowing only members of the "The Den,'' which is the student section, in for the game.
I was told the decision was made independent of the men's basketball program, and a UCLA official said the decision was made as a way to reward the students.

Great idea. We wouldn't want any other fans that have supported the team and school over the years to be able to participate.

Reward the students for what? Paying full price for tickets? Oh wait, they don't do that. Paying into the Wooden Fund? Oh wait, they don't do that. Acting like out of control college kids on occasion? Yeah, probably.

yikes mikeh! What about spending the night outside and being there for every game to help our team!? They do a great job and I know they will enjoy being on Gameday...

That's fine as long as they can fill the place. I wouldn't want the nation to see a nearly empty Pauley and get the impression that we don't have much passion for this program. We all know that UCLA limits student access to games in favor of higher priced season ticket-holders and doners. I'm less concerned about who's allowed access and much more concerned about sending the right message to the college basketball community.

Also read that ESPN's Erin Andrews will be handling the sideline reporting duties for the UCLA/zona game....double bonus for the students (even though she's a Florida Gator alum)
