PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

First hoops practices

UCLA coach Ben Howland took a few minutes with the media after the first two practices. He said C Lorenzo Mata was limited to non-contact stuff the first 30 minutes of each practice. He also said Kevin Love spent his time playing center, and Nikola Dragovic was at power forward.
Howland also said Luc Richard Mbah a Moute has been impressive.
“Luc is really shooting the ball well,'' Howland said. "Luc may have been the best player on our team in the first two practices. I thought Darren practiced really well.’’

Glad to hear Dragovic is in the mix, I hope his defense has improved.

If Dragovic can get his defense in order he can be a real big help. At the 4 he'd be able to pull Ryan Anderson, Taj Gibson, Brook Lopez and Jon Brockman away from the bucket with his shot. That means Love will be able to go 1 on 1 and Darren would have a much emptier lane to drive to.

If Luc can cosistently hit the jumper that'll be huge.
