PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Different perspective

I asked WR Brandon Breazell if this was a devastating loss.
"Nope,'' he said.
Why?
"Because we're only worried about the Pac-10.''
UCLA is 3-0 and in first place in the conference.

Sure...3-0 with only ASU, CAL, Oregon, and USC left to beat. Dude...think before you speak.

I agree with BB. The loss to Notre Dame was not devastating, cumulative losses to USC in '03 and '05, Wyoming in '04, U of A in '05, WSU and FSU in '06, and Utah and ND in '07 have been devastating. It is shameful that Dorrell marches loyal players (like BB) and assistant coaches to the firing squad every year, but never takes any of the blame himself.

Email Dan Guerrero dguerrero@athletics.ucla.edu to recommend that he replace Karl Dorrell immediately with an interim coach and restore competitiveness to this program.

We get ASU and Oregon late in the year. We should be healthy by then and both games are at home.

USC is USC.

The cal game is winnable if our offensive line shows up on run blocking. both Markey and Bell will be healthy and so will Everett.

All the QB has to do for cal is take care of the football and let the defense and running game win it.

BB is right. We stunk at UTAH and came back to win against Washington and at Corvallis.

Wow, KD really has these poor kids brain washed.

What happened to all the national Championship talk?

Cal is a totally different beast than the teasm we have played thus far. If we have an OSU performance against Cal, we'll lose by 50.

Like CAL has never choked on the road?

CAL has a sieve for a defense.

ND has a sieve for a defense. Cal at least has a paper bag. Our offense is capable of being shut out by a decent High School team. Depending on BO and PC injury status, we could find ourselves out of any bowl game.

I guess my only minor problem with BB's take on the loss is this: why didn't the players simply inform UCLA fans that the OOC games weren't important so that would could find other things to do with our time and money. If the games don't mean anything to the team why should it mean something to us??!!

I think this sieve can handle the six points you will be throwing at us.

Good job, while you are busy making such a concerted effort to get to the Rose Bowl, we’ll continue on our journey to New Orleans. This is why you are perennial losers.

NoCalBear,

Are you kidding me? You guys haven't won the conference in 50 years and you are calling us losers? Get to the Rose Bowl in your lifetime before you keep talking smack

BB is wrong. It's that simple. If we continue to put up with this crap and listen to the same lame excuses - we can expect the same bull**** every year. When we lose a PAC-10 game to Arizona or Washington St. - what will be our excuse then? "It's just a conference game, we focus on other conferences to make the PAC-10 look better." Unbelievable!

I don't think CAL will reach New Orleans, but they have won a share of the Pac-10 title within the last 5 years, which is more than the Bruins can say. After the beatdown to ND I think you should refrain from hyping your "O."

So evidently Bruce Davis' claim that "we're a national power" is not shared by the rest of the team?

Funny they are only concerned about the Pac-10 because given SC's loss to Stanford, a Bruin victory over Notre Dame could have had UCLA in line for a chance to go to the Title Game. Oh well, I guess in Westwood they only care about basketball.

BB obviously was frustrated with the result of the game and wanted to downplay the significance of it to rationalize the lack of offensive production. You cant expect an amateur athlete to know how to handle the media in this type of a situation. Bottom line- The offense needs to step up to the defense's level and stop making excuses.
