PROFILE

This is Brian Dohn's fifth season covering UCLA after spending 4 1/2 years covering the Dodgers for the Daily News and other Los Angeles Newspaper Group papers. He graduated from Rutgers, where the first college football game was played in 1869. Sure, the Scarlet Knights suffered for a long time, but now RU is doing what Jerseyans always thought was possible. Winning at Rutgers also proves winning is possible everywhere else in the nation, so underachieving coaches better be careful. Now, if only men's hoops can turn it around.

Offense to defense

How bad was the performance at Utah?
Well, the offense was moved to defense, and the defense was moved to offense.
Yes, a joke. In order to turn around the mojo, UCLA's offense is wearing blue in practice (it usually wears white) and the defense is wearing white (it usually wears blue).
QB Patrick Cowan is taking reps with the first unit because Ben Olson is out with a concussion, it was been confirmed.
DE Nikola Dragovic (concussion) still is not practicing, nor is FB Michael Ptire (knee), although he is doing conditioning work by running around the practice field.
I did notice a seriousness, almost an eerie quiet, when the Bruins came out of their locker room for practice today.

Very curious to hear about the tempo and general intensity of the practice this afternoon. Were the players anxious to put this behind them or did they practice as if they were a bit pensive?

Brian - have they said how long they expect Ben to be out?

Brian - it's hard not to specuale - is he really concussed? Or is this just the public excuse? Dorrell is such a stickler for not playing guys or making changes, I'd lean towards believing it (and he did get blasted in the game) but you have to wonder...

"I did notice a seriousness, almost an eerie quiet, when the Bruins came out of their locker room for practice today."

Yeah, I've noticed that sensation as well...at funerals, graveyards, and deep in the woods lost without a clue...

Brian,

When you say "Ben is out with a concussion" do you mean out of practice today or out for the game on Saturday?

I like the idea of swapping jerseys, humor promotes enthusiasm -- which we need.

While I never want to hear a guy miss time due to injuries, especially a potential concussion, the toughness and mobility of PC have been missed.

Brian,

Without naming names, do you personally believe there are members of the coaching staff and at least some players (if not many) who don't believe in the WCO?
