He said, he said
Depending on who you believe, UCLA either wasn't ready to play or was ready to play Saturday at Utah:
Here is what strong safety Chris Horton said:
"We weren't focused and we didn't show up to play. Scheme-wise, I don't think there was anything wrong. It was all on the players. I don't think we came out to execute and dominate the game, like we should have. I don't think we overlooked them, and we were definitely flat, and we did not show up on Saturday."
Here is what coach Karl Dorrell said:
"We're always surprised given the event that happened. We weren't expecting anything like that to happen, and we always draw back from the mistakes we made in the preparation we draw from, but I would disagree with that. I think as a coaching staff, we do every week the same way. Every week is a big, important game."

I think they're both right. Horton saying it's on the players which is true. Then Dorrell said they didn't do anything different, which is true as well. Dorrell needs to recognize that these are still kids and need some extra motivation in these games. If you just leave it as it is, the players are going to take a bad team like Utah lightly, which they did. He needed to do some extra stuff to make sure the loss wasn't on the players. They shouldn't have to motivate themselves, that's part of the coaches job.

Good to know the coaching staff and the players are already wildly out of synch after only the third game.
Really builds confidence, that.

Looking for 13-9 - still hiding?
BTW: Isn't it the COACH's job to anticipate situations on the field? What kind of lame excuse is Dorrell offering you guys? "We weren't expecting this...?" Well, maybe he should expect a pink slip in his pay envelope.

Anyone have a Dorrell translator handy. What exactly did he say?? Who knows I might actually agree with him ... but can't tell.

The players think they're SC or LSU talentwise. But the reality is they're the same level as most of the teams they play. Just look at the recruiting class rankings from 2003 and 2004 plus how many walkons are seeing significant playing time? Edwards, Blake, Reed, Taylor, Theriot. Lombard?
Coaching staff really needs to play up the "us against the world" or "those mofos disrespected us" or "revenge" angle.
For example. I read somewhere maybe the Seattle Post Ingelligencer that Jake Locker said he was going to run for 100 yards and pass for 400 yards this week against UCLA.

Bruce Davis already had said it was a bad week of practice - Horton is the 2nd.

Good posts by Drodri18 and Trey. These are not professional players and they do need direction from their leader. The inconsistent performances are indicative of the wrong people determining the intensity level weekly.
And as Trey said, talent-wise, UCLA is similar to most schools outside of the top 10. A lot of parity, so effort and competitiveness becomes the difference. UCLA went to Utah expecting to execute their way to a win (which they didn't). Utah came to compete and win. Two different attitudes, but guess which one wins? One thing about Carroll and $UC, they may have gobs of talent, but they come to compete and run teams over, not just to "execute". Attitude is everything!

I hear every year how the team isn't ready for a lower ranked team. How they look past them and don't come in focused. Frankly they aren't good enough to think like that. They were 7-6 last year, right? Not only is that on the players but the coaches too. Dorell still hasn't figured that out?
Well at least they thought enough about basketball to get a real coach.

Was that Karl Dorrell or Miss Teen South Carolina?

Man, if the way Dorrell speaks is a reflection of the way he coaches, then we need to hire a gameday translator to decipher his plays. Was that some kind of riddle, or was he speaking in tongues?
Common Dorrell, give us a hint.
