Fred, Fred, Fred,
It was meant as a joke, obviously, who would stoop so low to re-edit any article even if it was overblown? Don't take things so literally!
PS. I did read your Sat morning article. Keep up the good work. I like your post AT work.
Amat O line is very good, but LO Defense to me wasn't that good at all.
LO Defense bigger, faster, stronger, didn't see that with my eyes.
Again holes for Wagner were pretty HUGE....
Rankings,
So what might that tell you about amat's o-line?
Joe
Amat oline moved them around like babies.
Wouldn't say they are better, bigger, faster or stronger than last year.
Wagner was untouched so many times and some of the holes looked liked a Mac truck going thru.
Rankings,
You are right, one game doesn't prove anything.
But that Los Osos team is the preseason #27 team in the state. You might say that pre-season rankings are based on last year. Well, that Los Osos defense has NINE returning starters. That means taht the ranking is based on those players that started last year. And now they are a year bigger, faster, stronger, and better
No joke!
One game doesn't prove anything!
LO defense was a joke!
Hey Fred,
Your Saturday Morning QB comments have been deleted (or I can't seem to find them) so no one can go back and verify what you said.
Is it possible to restore them for posterity. Bloggers on the East side tend to reference the archives from time to time.
In all fairness, Wagner only had a few carries in a couple of games as a jumior. No reason, other than our hopes and suspicions, that he was going to be a top RB in the SGV. Big ups to Freddie for giving him props after seeing him live.
Who really cares about pre-season rankings. They are there to be discussed and proven wrong. It's much more important where you finish.
Wes Cov, re-edit my article? It is what it is. And I owned up, read the Saturday Morning Quarterback thread and my assessment of Wagner. I said I underrated him, and that he should be considered one of the top three RBs in the valley.
Fred,
Now that we all know that Marcus Wagner is the
real deal, you need to own up and re-edit your top SGV running back article and insert his name with rest of the group.
I think the Duarte RB needs to be reconsidered given his recent performance against 0-10 Ayala Bulldogs
Does anyone know who is on the coaching staff at South Hills? Besides Steve Bogan of course.
tim gilmore is one of the elusive running backs in the sgv but all people are under estimating tim capability's but will soon be suprised .
haha dirty
the huskies had their scrimmage today!!! Who said these kids cant hang? SH is the real deal! Stickin it to the 16th ranked team in the nation, thats the way to represent the SGV. Sherman Oaks only scored once and couldnt establish a running game. But with a guy like Dayne Crist its hard to stop the deep ball! SH is a Top Caliber program that can play with anyone!!! You need to see how agressive this SH team is! Come next friday to district and watch them Dawgs get dirtry
Ouch, just came back from the Amat game, you know it hurts when you where up 28-14 and then give up 3 TD's. Good effort for the Men in blue but those turnovers where very painful to watch. Kudos to Lenhart, showed alot of poise, he's got a very good arm, your receivers just need to learn to hang on to some of those on target passes that were dropped. Those boys from Los Osos came to play although it looked like they were gassing out in the 4th QTR. Turnovers killed us. 2 turnovers were converted to TD's. No TO's = Amat victory.
GOOD LUCK CHARTER OAK..... CANT MAKE IT TO EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT GAME.. BUT COME PLAYOFFS IM THERE...
Yea maybe I misunderstood all the hahahahaha's in your comments Lancer...its all good, no worries.
Trojan man, you got the right family. Those are my two older brothers. My football career ended before it even got started due to a leg injury my freshman year, but after 3 surgeries I was grateful I atleast got a chance to play some B-Ball.
GO PANTHERS!! GO SWORDSMEN!!! GO RAMS!!!
JJimenez,
No hate man, didn't I just say may your teams deserve a "W" for win. Maybe should I say, what are doing on the East side blog, don't you have one of your own?
Well anyway, good luck to your Swordsmen against Servite tonight. Don't get banged too much and save some juice for the Amat game.
It's all good then!
Just curious did you play with Steve Ybarra ...
Or were you the later QB Jimeniz ??? If the later , S.Moore should have been benched in 87' vs Arroyo , RHS would have won if you were that QB , much props to you .Hall was LOST . No direspect , just facts .
lol...you might have me confused for one of my brothers TROJAN MAN...but I guess he still might be.
JJIMENIZ ....BACKING RHS . NICE . Coach Dunaway would be VERY PROUD !!!
Its all good, lancermania hate all you want, no worries. I'll just brush you off my shoulders like I do with any hater, but for your info the 'Mead does get coverage by the Trib.
Good luck to Amat by the way.
SGV is actually 710 to 57 LANCERMANIA . Be Positive, OR BE GONE ... Period !
How did Amats frosh and soph teams do yesterday?
If you are headed to APU Saturday night, keep an eye out for Bonita's Jeff Chavez, another former Miramonte League stand out.
I think USD has a couple more Valley boys on the roster as well; Damien maybe? Glendora?
USD is a good Catholic School anyhow.
Rosemead, Swordsman, Rams?.....hahahahaha, may all your teams deserve a W, but please stay on your side of the freeway.
Go Amat!!! Go Huskies!!!! Go Bulldogs!!!!
Thank GOD for football!!!
Good luck to all the teams and hopes that all the kids stay injury free and healthy. I know where I'm gonna be tomorrow night, at "the pit" watching St. Paul vs Servite.
GO ROSEMEAD!!!! GO SWORDSMEN!!! GO RAMS!!
Saddle up boys its game day,
We've all been waiting for this, let the games begin!
Fred, I also didn't think this blog would be as good but Aram has left us in good hands with you, props to you and the big guy, cause this blog is still the best highschool blog around, & welcome aboard Steve Ramirez.
Good luck to all teams and may the major injuries stay away. Good luck especially to the
SGV teams who are playing teams from out of town,
[Amat, Diamond Bar, Diamond Ranch, Damien, Basset & La Puente] & Go West Covina Bulldogs, I know they will be in that top ten by seasons end, I can't remember the last time they weren't in the top ten, but its ok cause I like them in the underdog roll.
On APU, that's a great place to watch local college football. When I had the area college beat in the late 90s, that was my favorite place to go. You won't find any other local college that packs the stands like APU. MtSAC, Citrus, PCC, those are great places to watch future talent, and La Verne, Whittier, and the Claremont Schools are okay, but nothing locally compares to an APU game. If you have the chance, go watch one.
An option for Saturday night is to go see the Thompson twins ( the twin towers graduated CO '07) as they begin their college football career for University of San Diego. They will strap on the helmuts for the first time against APU at APU 7pm Saturday, Sept 1st.
Help fred, I fixed it
Fred;
Having a problenm opening the running back story. Appears its the same number as Ranking article?

WEST COVINA gets no love.... Ill tell you this they are much better than Duarte, Northview and Arroyo. West Covina is the sleeping Giant when you come to play them you better be ready. South Hills gets killed by Charter Oak and CO has alot of returners and lost by only a few points to El Dorado but yet there #2 go figuer... Amat playes in a leage that is VERY UGLY that most SGV teams wont even compete week after week and thay are rated #6 go figuer.... Go Bulldogs....
Why is it that south hills is ranked #1 in this poll but are ranked behind west covina in the cif poll? how does that work?
Hi Fred:
You and Steve did an outstanding job on the preview. Very classy and first rate!
It was so REFRESHING to see some really great posts and not the bashing or debate of whose better!
It just goes to show everyone, that we can get along even if we disagree and are so competitive by nature.
What has been a life lesson to me is that my kid has inspired me by watching him grow up to be a fine young man.
Nothing better, than going to a football game and watching your son or daughter play.
Let the games begin TONIGHT!
just so everyone knows this is the anonymous that was past over for a trib job aram got years ago. thats why the constant bag on aram he throws in at the end of his post constantly. this big goof keeps telling us all he's done with it but as you can tell he is still ticked he didnt get the nod years ago.
DEFINITELY WAY TO CLASS IT UP FRED..I SAW THE DIFFERENCE IMMEDIATELY AND I KNOW IT WILL ONLY GET BETTER. HEY ISN'T THERE ANOTHER REALLY GOOD SPORTS WRITER AT THE TRIB -- BRIAN BOTTELI ??? (or something close) I think he did a lot of baseball. He had a great writing style and seemed to love the sports. Again just to be clear-so glad The Big Goof is gone. There - done with it.
VIVA LA RAZA !!!
No need for comparison's, Aram did a great job and I love what I do too. I would also like to applaud Steve Ramirez, who helped me with this preview section. Steve I were hoping we could work side-by-side this season, and we just got confirmation this week that he will be on board the rest of the way. As most of you know, Steve is a former prep editor here and is a huge fan and historian of SGV sports. He also graduated from Northview and Cal State Fullerton, and lives locally. He now has a sign-on for this blog and will submit his own topics, and be a regular comment contributor. I think you will all benefit from having both our perspectives and it's an easy way to keep the blog thriving on a regular basis.
No knock to Aram , but I think I enjoy Fred's column better ...
Hey Fred, I have to say you really stepped up. Your preview and columns are well done and for the most part I like the direction of your blog. To be honest I didnt think you could replace Aram. You did. Good job.
MUCH RESPECT to you & your thoughts & takes on Football JOE AMAT . It actually ALMOST brought tears to this old mans eyes ...
Fred,
Understood that you have to mention the transfers. Fact of life. We have to deal with that.
At least you didn't call them defections : )
I wanted to make sure that no one else mistakes Fred's words as mine. In the first post, the part in quotes was posted from Fred's column that I was applauding. Again, Freddie, truer words have never been spoken and may not be more relevant than in sports today.
If student/athletes at the high school level begin thinking of themselves as *leaders* on campus instead of "big men on campus" some of them may not turn into athletes who feel entitled, feel the world revolves around them, and think that they can get away with anything because rules do not pertain to them.
For that amat may have done someone a favor. Best of luck to him.
Blues Brother, fair enough. But I don't know how I could write a preview about Bishop Amat without mentioning the obvious. There was more written about the players returning in that article, but it got cut out for space reasons, a problem we're always dealing with. I'll be at Amat on Friday, and would love nothing more than to watch them start off with a victory. When Amat's winning and beating the best team's in CIF, it's not only great for your fans, but great for football in the SGV.
Fred the edition was very well written and very informative the only draw back to a BA Lancer fan was you really took to the transfer situation and ran with it. I am glad Verti stepped in and mentioned that it was not about the program but for different reasons kids left. All the readers seem to think that the departed left because they were unhappy upset and that the team had nothing to gain this year. Not true and truth be told maybe for one or two of them unhappiness settled in but the rest had personal choices they had to make........I wish your coverage would have been more about this team we are bringing out Friday and not allot on the departed few.
Joe Amat
Very classy post and so true.
FANatic is on the Blog!
Great rankings Fred and great posts bloggers!
This will be my son's last season under the lights as a High School Football player. I sat down with him last night and asked him how this awesome experience has impacted his life and what he might miss most. His answer amazed me.
He said, dad, more than anything else I have learned about the value of HONOR and PRIDE. We work hard all year as a unit, a TEAM of individuals, to bring a sense of honor and pride to our school. Along the way, I made life long friends, I learned to rely on others, the power of repetitive training and most importantly, I learned that enthusiam and commitment made me a much stronger player. I know this football experience will provide my son with a greater value system as he enters the adult rat race.
He said he will miss most the energy rush he got under the lights, his coaches and beating up his friends during practice!
I'm sure all of you senior dads have great stories to tell. Ask your kid's about what this awesome experience has taught them and what will they miss most. You may be surprised with their response. Lets here about it!
Maybe Fred might find some interest in doing a senior section with some of the comments.
FANatic has left the Blog!
Joe Amat, literary accuracy at it's poetic best. As always, a pleasure to read your posts. Good luck to all, and represent our SGV to the BEST of your pride and abilities. Most of all . . . GO LOS ALTOS!! Engage and CONQUER!

Joe Amat Great post. That my friend is what football is all about. It is time for these young men to show what they have all worked so hard for.
Good luck to all teams in the SGV this year.

Let the games begin , I'll be @ Citrus tonight ...PLEASE EVERYONE SUPPORT OUR BOYS IN THE SGV . Winners or Losers , they ALL matter !!! Good Luck to all players & coaching staffs .
TROJAN MAN
Fred,
GREAT column today and truer words may never have been spoken. EVERY parent should clip this (or print it from online) and make sure that their sons (and daughters) read the words closely.
"...For the players who started during the early days of spring and continued through the brutal summer of two-a-days, it's lights, camera and action time.
But it's also a time not to take for granted.
As any former football player worth his helmet can attest to, the wins and losses are never forgotten, but the basic lessons in life are applied forever.
You'll know about sacrifice, unselfishness, brotherhood, camaraderie, and it will be taught and drilled into your head from coaches who will go down as some of the best role modes you ever had.
So are you ready, because the next 15 weeks are yours.
Enjoy it, soak it up, and revel in it.
The stage is yours to perform in, so take it with class, integrity and a passion for the game that inspires those little kids peaking over the fence who someday hope to wear your jersey.
After all, it's never too early to be a role model."
Good job Fred - way to kick off the '07 season
