Thank you, may I have another

Excuse me, Ms. Judd, your head if blocking the ESPY Awards logo. Can you move to one side or the other.

Apparently, despite all the bathroom humor Lance Armstrong used in the opening monologue, and the Mets-Cubs game that ran long and pushed the start of the tape-delayed show back a half hour, the 14th annual ESPY Awards show was seen by more than 2.5 million homes on Sunday night, the best viewership for this nonsense since 1997.

Which means the 15th annual ESPYs are a given. When will it jump the Tark?

Even Ludicris has to find this whole thing ludicrous. Armstong's monologue sure didn't get a grand review in the New York Times, which we whole-heartedly agree with, but is this kind of publicity the show has generated from its lack of taste really what it's shooting for now?

"We are ecstatic with both the result and Lance’s performance, said Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment said in a release that ESPN put out Tuesday. “He resonated with our viewers in a way few can. His athletic achievements coupled with his passion for helping cancer survivors were perfectly matched to The ESPYS’ goals of celebrating the best in sports and raising awareness of cancer through its support of The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that he’s got a great sense of humor and is willing to laugh at himself.

Lance's joke about Jake Gyllenhall liking to take it in the rear ... how many 6-year-olds watching the show with their parents asked them to explain that one?

The ESPN release went on to tout: The household count – an increase of 8% over last year – is based on a rating of 2.8, the show’s highest rating since 1997’s all-time high of 2.9. The 2005 ESPYS rated a 2.6. This year, ratings were higher than last year in more than half the local markets. Birmingham, Ala. (4.2), Dayton, Ohio and Pittsburgh (3.9), Phoenix (3.8) and Oklahoma City and Hartford/New Haven, Conn. (3.5), posted the top five local market ratings. In Chicago, where the White Sox and Bears were up for two ESPYS apiece, the rating more than doubled from 2005 (1.4) with a 3.2.

True, I would have tune in alone to see Ashley Judd. But I had no idea she was part of the show until I saw the taping last week.

All this proves is once again, there's no accounting for taste. Or a night in the middle of the summer when all there are is reruns of "Law and Order." Why weren't you watching "Volleywood Nights" on FSN?

Lance Armstrong's comments refelct yet another fine example of Disney "entertainment". This never would have happened under the Capital Cities regime. So ESPN's going to hell, along with the rest of what was once ABC...big surprise!
