Kobe didn't rate a mention
The Daily News is moving at the end of this week to a new office a few blocks away in Woodland Hills. As we empty drawers and cabinets that have been here for 21 years, we're finding old copies of the newspaper. Some are historic, but even the unremarkable editions of the paper are fun to look through.
Here's what's in one picked at random, from Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996.
Some things that haven't changed:
- I wrote about John Wooden meeting young cancer patients. A big point in the column was that Wooden was really old (86 at the time).
- The Kings and Clippers lost games.
- My school, Monroe High, lost a game.
Some other things look weird in retrospect:
- Rookie Kobe Bryant was second off the Lakers' bench and scored 10 points in a loss to Toronto. He was not mentioned in Marc Stein's game story.
- Scott Wolf wrote about how USC needed to beat Stanford to keep alive their hope of playing in a bowl game.
- Kevin Acee wrote about the CSUN football game (!) coming up at Idaho State.
Some other things that are otherwise interesting in retrospect:
- Mike Rosenthal wrote about whether Evander Holyfield could possibly find a way to beat Mike Tyson in their first meeting, coming up that night.
- Jon Wilner wrote that UCLA quarterback Cade McNown might be benched if the offense didn't move against Washington State.
- Wilner noted that Baron Davis was scheduled for his first UCLA recruiting visit that weekend.
- Joe Borchard quarterbacked Camarillo High to victory, Justin Fargas carried Notre Dame High to victory.
- Christy Canyon was dancing at Bob's Classy Lady.

Kevin Modesti watches sports from a new angle since his promotion from sports columnist to sports editor for the Los Angeles Newspaper Group. In his new blog, Modesti not only comments on the big sports stories of the moment-- he talks about what makes them big. Think of it as a conversation with readers about how these stories should be covered.
