Groundbreaking scheduled for freeway project

| | Comments (4) |

I wrote a story about a week ago about construction starting on a 2.2-mile stretch of the 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park, where Caltrans is building a carpool lane on either side of the highway.

This construction -- between the 605 interchange and Puente Avenue -- is actually part of a larger, three-phase project aimed at creating carpool lanes on each side of the interstate from Los Angeles to the San Bernardino County line.

Baldwin Park officials were pretty excited about the start of construction, because they say that portion of the freeway is heavily traveled and often bottlenecks.

But it seems they're not the only ones who have been looking forward to the expansion. Assemblyman Ed Hernandez, Assemblyman Mike Eng, and several other dignitaries from Baldwin Park, the CHP and MTA will be meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday -- yup, Election Day -- for a groundbreaking ceremony.

Don't fret, it won't be on the freeway. It'll be near it, in the parking lot area of Guadalajara Grill Restaurant, 14610 Garvey Ave. in Baldwin Park.

I am all for the construction to ease traffic and I understand the construction is needed, but my concern is for the motorist who use the Baldwin Park Blvd. west bound entrance lane to the 10 fwy. You see, for the last week since the barriers were placed, jumping on the fwy leaves just a small cushion for the vehicles to enter and merge with oncoming traffic who are traveling at high rates of speed. I myself have noticed in two occasions that cars have had to almost slam on their brakes because there is no sufficient space to merge. I use this entrance every morning to get to work and not only do I have to go through this, but other motorist as well. I am wondering if these barriers are only temporary and if they are not, what can be done to resolve this problem. I am willing to demonstrate my concern to any official, because these barriers are asking for an accident.

North bound 605 to Eastbound 10 sucks. Who thought of this (or didn't) It is my firm belief that a 4 year old thought, celebrate my ass it takes an extra 45 minutes to get home and yes Westbound at Baldwin Park Blvd sucks BAD if you are trying to get on the freeway (parking lot) they should just shut the whole freeway down...
