HS FOOT: Running back Bray on the move again

Talented but troubled running back Antonio Bray is hoping to get back on track after transferring to defending City Invitational champion Arleta High this summer after stops at Canyon, Alemany, then Canyon again.

"Antonio is in summer school here but he has not been cleared. That's the No. 1 issue right now," Arleta coach Jeff Engilman said. "I've heard he's a real good ball player but I have not talked to the Canyon coach (Chris Varner), so I don't know what went wrong."

Engilman said Bray has moved in with an uncle near the Arleta campus. The coach said he is expecting a decision on Bray's eligibility no later than Aug. 14, the last day of summer school.

Bray, who runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, has not played since his sophomore season in 2007 at Alemany, where he scored seven touchdowns, two on kick returns, and appeared to be destined for stadom despite run-ins with coach Dean Herrington, who suspended him for one game during the regular season.

At Canyon as a freshman, Bray rushed for more than 1,600 yards in eight JV games but later was suspended for fighting before transferring. He returned to Canyon for his junior season but was declared ineligible, and in this past spring he again was suspended for fighting.
