Basketball: JC Playoffs Tonight. Valley Wins behind Riney

| | Comments (0) |

Former Grant of Van Nuys standout Gino Riney recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Los Angeles Valley College to an 82-65 Southern California Junior College first round playoff victory.

Valley had four players score in double figures. Shawn Johnson had 21 points and 15 rebounds while Germel Coleman and Chris Horstman added 19 and 11 points for the Monarchs (18-11).

Horstman made three 3-pointers in the first half helping Valley go on a 16-2 to lead comfortably at halftime, 43-26.

Long Beach City tried to comeback behind Vance Lawrence (30 points) and Steve Richard (16 points), cutting the deficit to 11 points with 5:09 remaining but didn’t have enough gas in the tank to complete the task. Lawrence made seven 3-pointers but shot 11 of 34 from the field.

Valley advances to play at No. 4 Ventura Saturday night at 7 p.m.
