AT&T nixes cell tower plans

| | Comments (4) |

A spokesman for AT&T has confirmed that the company has withdrawn its application to install a cell phone tower in Southwest Pasadena.

The proposal, which would have placed the structure on open space next to the Hillsides children services facility off of Church Street, had met with fierce opposition from neighbors and spawned the formation of a community group dedicated to keep the hillside land as open space.

AT&T has decided that it can "provide the necessary coverage without pursuing this particular site," said company spokesman Geoff Mordock. Mordock, however, did not rule out the possibility that AT&T might look for other cell tower locations in the area.

Joan Dooley, a high school teacher and Hillsides neighbor who has opposed construction of the tower, was happy to hear about AT&T's decision. But she expressed concern that another phone company might swoop in and piggyback onto AT&T's abandoned application. She said Hillsides, which had a contract with AT&T to allow construction of the tower, has said it lacks the funds to maintain the property in its natural state.

Still waiting to hear from Hillsides or the city about whether the application could still be continued by another company, or whether the children's facility is still interested in renting out the space to another telecom. Until then, it is hard to say whether this issue is truly dead.

CITY COUNCIL CAVES LIKE HOUSE OF MARSHMALLOWS BEFORE THE SPANDEX HORDE OF THE PELOTON. The city of Pasadena has begun posting signs in the Rose Bowl prohibiting pedestrians from walking Clockwise (with traffic). Pedestrians are now only allowed to walk counter Clockwise. When I approached a member of the Pasadena PD and asked him what would be the consequences of walking with traffic he replied, "a ticket". When I asked what measures the city was demanding of the Peloton he said " they will have to follow the same restrictions they always have". In other words nothing. Pedestrians are now at risk for tickets for using the Rose Bowl campus to walk but the Peloton now has free and unrestricted access to do whatever they please whenever they please. Last summer Chief Melekian proposed a city ordinance to impose a modicum of safety on the Peloton and as of November when I asked him about its progress he said that the issue had not been forgotten. It turns out their solution is to give in to the intimidation that was demonstrated at the city council meetings this summer, Yell loud enough and the city council will cave. Those of you interested in getting the Heritage Square project should take note. V.C. Section 21956: (b) A pedestrian may walk close to his or her right-hand edge of the roadway if a crosswalk or other means of safely crossing the roadway is not available or if existing traffic or other conditions would compromise the safety of a pedestrian attempting to cross the road.

Try walking on the left side northbound on west drive at salvia canyon. Try walking on the left side across the 8 intersections with traffic that have no crosswalks. Walking on the left if you choose to walk around the outside loop of the Rose Bowl is un-safe. Will the city pave and mark the other direction to make it safe?

The point of walking counter clockwise is a simple practice of "walking/hiking" safety, as noted in my Boy Scout Manual from back in the day. Would you rather be able to see traffic and move yourself to avoid it (i.e. car, bicycle, scooter, etc) when they go askew, or be run over from behind without any warning? By walking counter clockwise, you at least have a chance to move yourself out of danger if it approaches you. This is part of scanning the road, just like you do when you drive. As a regular walker around the Rose Bowl, I'd rather be able to make some kind of judgment call when motorists (this includes cyclists) go astray. Anyone else going clockwise is just asking to be a victim of the cyclists or any other vehicle moving along the roads. Those vehicles are moving as they are supposed to. This whole thing is an issue about safely sharing plentiful space, not about who has MORE right than another to use. Are tickets really going to work? Probably not, but I'd like to hope that common sense is something people can start to use again instead of the city "telling us" what to do.

When it is unsafe to walk against traffic you are allowed by law to walk on the "wrong" side of the road. I am in the Rose Bowl 6 of seven days of the week and have attempted walking in all directions on both sides and sometimes there is just no other alternative than to walk with traffic. If you don't believe me please try it for yourself
