Meeting

| | Comments (13) |

A small follow-up to the infamous flier first referenced here last week.

The big meeting reportedly only drew ... four people. But the flier did indicate it was the "first" of such meetings.

ALSO someone posted in the comments a link to "Killing mockingbirds" by Kevin Uhrich of the Pasadena Weekly:

Despite the book’s good intentions, however, NAACP Pasadena Branch President Joe Brown and Chandler parent Jim Morris want it taken out of the school’s English curriculum.

Neither Brown nor Morris want to take it out of the library. But using the book and its questionable language to teach young children lessons in English runs the risk of “sending the wrong message” to children.

For the record I did talk to Joe Brown, who says neither he nor his office had anything to do with -- or supported -- the lynching flier.

Four people? Does that include who ever took the count? Then it would be three. Congrats to the people for seeing this for what it is; nonsense.

We can be thankful people have sense to see those sorts of things for what they are, and recognize the intent behind them. I'm guessing four "audience" members. Who was there to lead the meeting? Paul (the real one, not the pretender)
Two people were just there for the refreshments.

Perchance, did the refreshments consist of Mud Pies provided by Robin's? I remember the "To Kill a Mockingbird" flutter at Chandler. I'm glad the administration kept one of the greatest books of the 20th century on the required reading list. Similar complaints about Huck Finn miss the point about the books being reflective of the culture and era they portray and that the prevailing sentiment of the books (in each case) are that those being tainted with the "N" word are positive characters. Atticus Finch in TKAM admonishes his kids to treat everyone respectfully and not use "that word" and Jim in Huck Finn is about the only character who doesn't require redeeming through the course of the book. He's a genuine good guy! Perceptions are also guided by good teaching... Paul (the real one, not the pretender)
Jim Lomako as Boo Radley
This is the decision I came to when writing "Blackbirds: Volume 1." Books shouldn't be removed from our schools which pull back a window on the history just because they contain certain language. We should always be willing to educate people, instead of riling them up or trying to scare them into action.
There's a difference between using the accepted language of the day for historical/anachronistic purposes and using unnecessary racial slurs.

We frequently fail to distinguish between a thing and representation of a thing. A painting of a pipe is not a pipe, and even a single word has context. To rewrite our historical records -- even those which cosnciously wielded powerful language to great, illustrative effect -- for the sake of mitigating discomfort ... well ... don't say Orwell didn't warn you. k that's enuff out of me.
Doubleplusgood, Todd.

Casting the remake (a nod to Mayor-in-Waiting A.P.): Bill Crowfoot as Atticus. (if he was still with us I'd cast John Crowley); Jim Lomako as Bob Ewell (but he thinks he's Atticus Finch); Aaron Proctor as a goth Dill Harris; Todd Ruiz as Jem and Molly O'Keon as Scout; Bill Bogaard as Boo (think about it); Stacy Lewis as Tom Robinson; Chief Melekian as Sheriff Heck; Rick Cole as Walter Cunningham (the dad); Larry Wilson as Walter Cunningham, Jr; Joyce Streater as Calpurnia; Margaret McAustin as Mayella (think about this one, too); City Manager Kurtz as Alexandra; Paul Little (in drag) as Miss Maudie; Sue Mossman as Mrs. Dubose; Sid Tyler as Underwood; Steve Madison as Dolphu Raymond; Steve Haderlein as Nathan Radley. FYI - in another life I used to teach the book.
I've always wanted Bill & Claire to play the husband and wife in a Pasadena Follies version of "Cape Fear" (the `91 version). I could play Max Cady. "Do I look destitute to youuuuuu counselor?"

When the terrorism by the pasadena denver lane bloods against people of a different color is over, then we can all be happy about people being too mature to fall for racial nonsense.
