Streator dishes on council's sweet, back-room dealings

Image courtesy City of PasadenaIt's halfway through the show's two-week rotation, but be sure to catch City Beat on KPAS 55. It streams daily over the web and cable television, between encore presentations #236 and #237 of the epic talk-a-thon that was last month's ACT candidate forum.

Why? Two words: Joyce Streator, District 1 councilwoman. It was a treat to chat with Joyce, as it's no big secret she otherwise doesn't talk to reporters. Also on the show is city spokeswoman Ann Erdman and Andre Coleman, another reporter. They introduced Andre as "the weekly reporter," which must be nice, because I work every day.

We talked about the March 6 election, new PUSD supe Edwin Diaz and the Desiderio project -- that is when Andre and I weren't sparring over which of us is paid less, or who has the juicier campaign rumors.

Off camera, Joyce talked about her long-fought, invisible, and ultimately failed campaign to affect change on the council -- her battle to get healthier snacks provided during Monday night council meetings.

Apparently, it's nothing but cookies behind the blue curtain at the Pasadena Senior Center, which serves as temporary council chambers while City Hall is renovated.

And who is eating all these cookies? In her unflinching style, Joyce named names: Mayor Bill Bogaard and District 4 Councilman Steve Haderlein.

As for the six-way race to succeed her, Joyce said she had no plans to endorse any of the candidates, but hinted she might weigh in when the whole thing -- almost inevitably -- goes to a run-off election.

Update: Kudos to the Black Male Forum/Joe Hopkins/Pasadena NAACP for sponsoring Thursday night's District 1 candidate forum at the Jackie Robinson Community Center, which was only interrupted by a steady stream of chairs brought in to accomodate the crowd for the well-attended event.

It would be nice if I was a Weekly reporter as well considering I work every day also. Enjoyed the show - take care
If I lived in District 1, I'd vote for Jacque Robinson. She's young, she's real, she knows what she's talking about - and most importantly - she is always nice, polite, and never talks down to me.
