BILL DWYRE TO RECEIVE PYRAMID AWARD

Former LA Times Sports Editor Selected As The Second-Annual
John Wooden Pyramid Award Recipient

Anaheim, CA (December, 9 2008) - This year at the prestigious John
Wooden Classic Coaches Dinner the second annual Pyramid Award will be
awarded to Bill Dwyre. The Pyramid Award is presented to the person
who exemplifies and lives out the qualities of Coach Wooden's famous
"Pyramid of Success."

"I'm honored that the pyramid award has been established in my name
and congratulate Bill on being this year's recipient," said John R.
Wooden, who will be on hand this Friday for the award presentation.

Dwyre, 64, has many achievements, but is perhaps best known for his
work as the sports editor of The Los Angeles Times, a position he
held for 25 years until he stepped down in May '06 to return to his
roots as columnist. While at The Times Dwyre was named National
Editor of the Year in 1985 by the National Press Club in Washington,
D.C., for his directing of his paper's 1984 Los Angeles Summer
Olympic coverage. He won the Red Smith Award from the Associated
Press Sports Editors in 1996 for service to sports journalism. Other
awards include the Subiaco Arkansas Academy's Literary Award of
Merit, Powerade Sports Story of the Year from the National Assn. of
Sportscasters and Sportswriters, Wisconsin Sportswriter of the Year
in 1980, National Headliner Award in 1985 and Los Angeles Times Award
for Sustained Excellence, also in 1985.

Aside from his occupational accomplishments, Dwyre serves the
community as a member of the board of directors of Casa Colina
Hospitals for Rehabilitation in Pomona. During his years as a board
member, Casa Colina has built a new $80 million hospital in Pomona,
establishing its position as one of the leading rehab hospitals in
the country.

Dwyre is a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame University, in Communication
Arts. He worked on the sports staff of the Des Moines Register,
1966-'68, and the Milwaukee Journal, 1968-'81. He was sports editor
of the Journal from 1975-'81, before moving to The Times. A native of
Sheboygan, Wisconsin, he resides in San Dimas with his wife Jill
Jarvis and has two grown children, Amy and Patrick.

Last year, the inaugural award was bestowed upon Rafer Johnson, who
played for Coach Wooden at UCLA and went on to among other things win
an Olympic gold medal in the decathlon at the 1960 Olympic Games and
co-found California Special Olympics in 1969.
