How can Octogranny & Octogramps say that the reporter "misinterpreted or "fluffed" their story?
When it was Octogranny in the video or was that an impersonator? It sure sounded like her! There was a video on Life & Style magazine.com! WOW, This family is screwed up, to say the least! They all lie! All I can do is shake my head, this is sad for the children. I pray that they ALL get help and fast!

I know Octorazzi is only reporting what these habitual liars tell him, but I think he should also have them clarify their lies.

So according to the gypsy-gramps everything everyone reports is false. Well, one of their versions is false also. I am starting to see where Missy has learned her trade of lying to suit the circumstances.
Remember the RO vid when granny angrily went to Nadya's house demanding "why didn't your lawyer exonerate you? Why didn't he say Aiden was hurt at school?" Granny were you asking Nadya's lawyer to tell a lie?

I know it is a long-shot, but one day soon Nadya will REALLY seek professional to sort out her upbringing, her unhealthy family relations and how it all created who she is today. As an Adult, it is her responsibility to undue what the gypsy-gramps monster creation or she can choose to live as her parents do. If the kids are to have a chance at a okay life, she would have to take on a moral value system different from her parents.

Hi Grandma! Angela is the key to the whole family IMO. Ed spoiled Nadya to make up for Angela's overbearing ways. I can picture her critiquing everything Nadya did as a little girl. "Why did you tie your shoe that way" and on and on. Do you get that sense even a little?

Nadya said her lips were swollen because of the pregnancy weight, she lost the weight and now they are no longer swollen.

How can pictures lie or the video? "L&S magazine took them without her permission?" Why were they in the house? How did they get in? Someone had to invite them in. They just don't barge into peoples' homes. These people are something else!

Octomom's TV deal and Jon & Kate's tabloid world bring new focus on child labor laws

gosselinoctomom.jpgNow that Nadya Suleman, better known as Octomom, has inked a TV deal for all 14 of her children, she might want to take a close look at another reality show that owes its success to a large brood--the Pennsylvania Department of Labor is currently looking into whether the hit reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 is complying with the state's child labor law. All of this underscores an important issue that tends to slip through the tabloid headlines. If publicity-hungry parents aren't always looking out for their kids best interests, who is?
The answer varies depending on what state the show is filming in. Suleman and her children live in California, while the Gosselins call Pennsylvania home. According to Kelly Scott, head of the Employment Law Division at Ervin Cohen & Jessup in Beverly Hills, child labor laws generally apply to reality show kids in California, though every state has different laws, which have not all caught up with the reality TV craze. Pennsylvania laws, for example, "say you have to get a permit for a kid seven years of age and up, and that's when they can start working in the entertainment field," Scott tells iVillage.

But six of the eight Gosselin kids are only five years old. Does that mean being filmed around the clock for Jon & Kate Plus 8 might not qualify as working in the entertainment field? If not, then technically parents Jon and Kate Gosselin aren't working either, despite receiving hefty paychecks--between $25,000 and $75,000--for each episode. There is, however, a case to be made that the Gosselin kids aren't actually subject to child labor laws. "I think the argument here is that they're in their own home. They're not doing anything other than what they'd ordinarily be doing, or so we're told," says Scott. "And is that really working? Should the laws apply? I think that's what the Pennsylvania Labor Department has to look at. I think for them it's really the first time they've had to look at that."

Others aren't as likely to play devil's advocate. Stuart Shapiro, a partner at Cohen & Lombardo, P.C. in Buffalo, NY, feels that by appearing on the show, the kids are doing work. "The reason money is changing hands is because of these kids, so the parents aren't getting a gift. There has to be work involved," he says. "It's very hard for anybody to argue that when you're doing this number of episodes and featuring the kids and featuring their images, that they're not really providing an entertainment service."

The child labor guidelines facing Octomom, however, are more clearly delineated. Because her kids' work will fall under the California child labor laws, 15 percent of the children's earnings must go into a special fund called a "Coogan Account." That requirement came out of a 1935 case involving a child star named Jackie Coogan--a Los Angeles actor who had been discovered by Charlie Chaplin. Cougan sued his mother and stepfather whom he claimed had spent most of the millions he earned on luxuries for themselves like diamonds and cars. He won the case, but only got $126,000 after legal expenses. Coogan Accounts are currently only required in California, New York, Louisiana and New Mexico. A financial guardian has been appointed to oversee the remaining 85 percent of the Suleman kids' earnings. However, Scott explained that Suleman could still access that money "for the caring of and well being of the minor(s)." How much she can withdraw for those purposes is unclear. Monetarily, at least, it seems her children are more protected than the Gosselins, merely because they live in California.

Of course, it's not just about the money. Octomom already finds herself fending off one law suit by a child labor activist. And nobody knows yet how these reality shows will affect the lives of the children who star in them. From the TV show cameras--which are currently capturing the Gosselin's divorce--to the endless paparazzi attention, they're in the constant spotlight. Kathleen McKee, a professor at Regent University's Law School in Virginia, worries about the Gosselins in particular. "Why are these children less entitled to protection than any other children?" she asks. "They can't say, 'No, I don't want somebody to come in to my home. No, I don't want anybody to film me.' They're vulnerable. There is a certain level of exploitation going on. There wouldn't be a program with just Kate and Jon. It's because of the children that it has marketability."

California, on the other hand, has strict rules for kids in entertainment. According to Scott, issues like "lighting, how long they're in the lights, how many minutes they can work, if there has to be a nurse present when you have a certain number of infants, when you have to have a studio teacher present, when the guardian has to be present and when permits are required" are all regulated, protecting kids from any potential exploitation. Going forward, production companies will more likely make similar efforts to take the kids into account. "I think with the increased regulation and the possibility that you've got these advocacy groups out there that did not exist before, that you'll see less of that kind of stuff," says Shapiro. "There's going to be more control over it at the basic level."

This is not true:

There is no financial guardian and the GAL is only entitled to request pertinent documents and evaluate them to make a report to the courts. Nadya still has full control.

I haven't read the full LS article, but did see the video on their site. That was so foolish. Angela really didn't say much or give anything away. She didn't answer any important questions or give any more insight into the situation. Saying Nadya left the house messy is true, but we have no idea if there is more to the story. I think Nadya being mad at her mother is nothing new. This has been going on for a long time.

Ed spoiled Nadya and endulged her all her life. Only when Angela saw it spiraling out of control did she try to do anything about it. Nadya used this to her advantage with getting more from daddy and working
the parents against each other. Both Angela and Nadya have strong personalities and that is why they lock horns. Up until the octuplets, Nadya was a noone in the larger picture, now she is using this against Angela. I think Angela loves Nadya and all her grandchildren. She sees some of what we see and is powerless to change things she things need to be changed. It would be frustrating to be Angela. It is too bad they have this type of relationship.

It is true- there is a lot of reading between the lines with much of the tabloid stories out there,and truthfully a lot of Nadya's story is in this category. Sadly I don't think Eyeworks is out to depict a true story either. Just my feeling.

Of course we only can comment on the story and situation from what we see. I think anyone realizes that that in itself is limited, but. . . Nadya's actions speak loud and clear. She is challenged in many areas of her life. I know of and see many Nadya's, but there is a big difference.

Nadya chose to have all these children. Nadya chose to put herself out for the media to dissect. Nadya has made many decisions that have put in the poor light of the public. What about the family that had octuplets and one died? We didn't hear much about them because they choose to live their life differently, and I am sure it isn't just because they didn't have 6 other children. I just can't buy into the camp of "Poor, Poor Nadya"

There are many celebrities out there who don't make the tabloids, who are actually celebrities. Others make small time news int he tabloids with boring stories like they are at the store buying dog food, or they remembered to wear a bike helmet when out for a ride. Others make the tabloids because they are under age drinking, or don't have their kids strapped into their car seats. Yes, it must be hard having paps follow you waiting to make a mistake, but if you know they are out there, why say or do certain things?

I just came back from the store and looked at the LS article while in line. I don't think the article was all that awful and I sure there was some truth to it. Angela knows what the tabloids are all about and it was her choice to invite to her home. I saw nothing really new in that article that should make Nadya that mad. As I said. . . this is nothing new. The whole family likes to work the situation to their benefit. I think Angela has been telling Ndya that she can't do this all alone and this is one way of Nadya snubbing her back and saying "Watch me, yes I can."

But at what expense? At the kids expense, once again.

I read Missy's latest interview in US Weekly mag this morning. Funny. The comments I refer to were made by Nadya to USWeekly mag. (hopefully, she won't say she never did the interview, sound famiLIAR?)

Paraphrasing:

Nadya said that one of her indulgences is that she splurges on "Healthy Food" and buys Lots of ORGANIC meat.
(sounds famiLIAR...mmm wasn't that something Kate Gosselin said on one of her episodes?)

Guess I should start eating daily meals out a McDonalds, Pollo Loco, Carl's Jr., and Starbucks. I did not know they NOW serve ORGANIC MEAT. Wow!

Nadya said that she is an impulsive shopper. Yes! Yes! Yes! Negative old me finally AGREES with something out of those famous lips.

The honesty couldn't last forever, though. Because, next she says that she AVOIDS Toys R Us. What? She does a at least once a week trip and comes loaded up with Toys- look at all the crap she left at the old house as well as the boatload at the new house.

Pleasantly Plump Ladies... there may be help on the way. Nadya may market her special technique of sit-ups that gave her the "flat, flat stomach" in just 3 MONTHS after giving birth. Imagine that, and here I thought she was wearing a Girdle the whole time. I stand corrected.

She says the dad is Hispanic. (Now I know why some babies look Mexican/Hispanic, Irish/Caucasion, Arab/Middle Eastern, African American, every thing except Asian.) Uh, I don't think so.

At this point I thought I was watching an episode of Jon & Kate plus 8 when Nadya said something about being a clean freak and organization.

Sorry for the endless post but the article was filled with Oh-so-many-Facts right out of Nadya's mouth.

None of that means that Nadya's children are less deserving of protection or concern but I do think it puts things into perspective. The money being spent on investigating the details of Nadya's children's situation by the courts and CPS could be helping children living in parking-lots with their parents.

I look at the hoopla and outrage over the octoplets, who appear well-fed, appropriately dressed and housed, and as content as any normal babies. The older children are in private school and an educational specialist is seeing the ones that need it. They have extra-curricular activities. There are nannies day and night and all the children are seen in public regularly. Whatever we may think of the grandparents their love for all the children appears genuine. None of these children will ever slip through the cracks. All Nadya's kids, not just the octoplets, will almost certainly have enough money for college.

Nadya's general judgement, values, and what appears to be a very casual approach to disciplining are questionable but lots and lots of children aren't raised in ideal circumstances. Across Canada and the United States thousands and thousands of children are being raised in far worse circumstances. Sure they get some media attention once in a while when the "poverty" problem is discussed but rarely if ever with the passion reserved for Nadya's children or other reality show children.

That other children don't get the attention the octoplets are getting doesn't negate the validity of showing concern for the octoplets and their siblings. It does leave me feeling a bit cynical about what I see as extreme condemnation of Nadya in comparison to the lack of passion and will to address the needs of children across North America because we don't want to spend the money. There we are full of excuses as to why we can't or shouldn't or it's not our responsibility. But the main complaint is that we can't afford to, which is BS.

ANYONE - do you have the link to that video? The one where Nadya is walking into the courthouse?

One court case is for the octoplets, not the children, to have a separate agent. The agent's focus would be maximizing income not the general well-being of the octoplets.

A lot of the reporting has been about Nadya having the octoplets not about the octoplets themselves. Nadya's past and present, what she wears, what she says, what she buys, where she goes. The attention is because she had octoplets on top of six other children not because of anything the octoplets have or haven't done.

The older children as individuals have also captured the public's interest. Babies are cute but they do get boring if they are just laying around babbling. The interest in all of these big family stories is how the family copes and with multiple births how they cope with X number of babies all the same age. The fame may come from having the multiples, but the multiples alone are not the story.

For the sake of argument, let's say there is a conflict of interest between the octoplets and the rest of the family. Having a separate agent would not remove conflict of interest problems it would exaberate them.

In contracts that involve the whole family two agents would be negotiating separately and would be played off each other. It puts the octoplets in conflict of interest with their siblings not just Nadya. The octoplet's agent whose income is based on what the octoplets make could refuse to accept contract offers on joint projects unless Nadya agreed to let the octoplets do many more hours of work on independent projects.

That could lead to the octoplets having to work much more to satisfy their agent's interests.

Even if it resulted in greater financial gain for the octoplets in comparison to their siblings and mother I'm not sure that is a good thing for them if it comes at the cost of pitting the interests of family members against one another. The octoplets aren't professional actors earning money from their personal talents. Emotionally, I think it would be better for all the children, octoplets included, to have the same earnings.

I don't see living 3, 4 or more to a bedroom and sharing 2 bathrooms between 15 people followed by a financial windfall at 18 as necessarily a good thing. I think that carries some real risks to it.

Depending on how much a separate financial manager with the right to examine contracts would cost for ALL the children not just the octoplets I think it could be a good thing for them.

No Lise I don't, sorry. I can't remember where I got it in the first place. I thought in one of these threads but I don't know which.

Still don't think Angela is that awful. Yes, Nadya is a product of her environment, as well we all are. Angela of hers and Ed of his, but there is a time where we all become adults and need to take accountability for our actions and not blame our parents.

I'm sure it does hurt to have your parents say something negative about you, especially to the public, but I remember Nadya saying some negative things about her parents ( Angela) too. No excuses for either one of them! Nadya is an adult, as Angela and needs to also take accountability for her actions.

The point I was making is I don't feel sorry for Nadya because I don't think any of this recent falling out is anything new. I feel sorry for her because she doesn't have a good relationship with her mother, but in the general sense, not because of the article etc.article. We are just hearing about it because of the media. I think something like this has been happening all along, and has nothing to do with the octuplets birth.

They need counseling to mend their relationship and to be better role models for these children. I can hear both Nadya and Angela saying negative things about the other in front of the children.

Angela says this has been going on since Nadya moved, but the children have been seeing the grandparents. We have been seeing photos of them, as well as Angela staying with the children during her first hospital stay. This is just the latest rift. I am sure there have been many.
