Carl Skerlong, driver for Oxnard-based Pacific Coast Motorsports in the Atlantic Series,
crashed during a test session Tuesday at Road Atlanta in Georgia and suffered a concussion. He will not race in the season finale this weekend at Road Atlanta.
Skerlong is fourth in the Atlantic Series standings, won his first Atlantic Series race in New
Jersey in September and had two poles and seven top fives in his rookie season.
"I was so excited to fight for a top-three finish in the championship this weekend," Skerlong said. "I am quite sore from the accident but not being able to race is much more painful." Skerlong's teammate Frankie Muniz will race this weekend at Road Atlanta.
Jonathan Bomarito, driver for the Encino-based Mathiasen Motorsports, leads the Atlantic Series standings.

Pacific Coast Motorsports wins Atlantic Series race

Carl Skerlong, driving for the Oxnard-based Pacific Coast Motorsports, won his first Atlantic Series race for the team. He won the inaugural Atlantic Series race at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Sunday.
Skerlong is fifth in the Atlantic Series standings, one point out of fourth and 17 out of third.
It was Skerlong's fourth podium finish of the season. The next race for the Atlantic Series is at Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Sunday.
"I am so excited to get back in the car," Skerlong said. "The win last weekend gives us a lot of momentum heading into Miller Motorsports Park this week. The track there is awesome, but it is so long that you have to be precise and it will be important to get the car dialed in very quickly, because one mistake or one bad lap costs so much time. Our sessions are not that long, so every lap counts. I am looking forward to it."

Pacific Coast Motorsports heading to Indy

Oxnard-based Pacific Coast Motorsports will enter a car driven by Mario Domingiez in the Indianapolis 500 in May, the team announced in Mexico City on Wednesday.
Domimguez drove the team's No. 96 entry in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, the last Champ Car World Series race, and finished third. He will make the transition with Pacific Coast Motorsports into the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series for the remainder of the 2008 season starting with the Indianapolis 500.
The team plans on being at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 2.
“With our recent success at the Long Beach Grand Prix and with Mario giving me my first podium as a team owner, we couldn’t be more excited, and we can’t wait to get started," said team owner Tyler Tadevic. "This program is an extension of our belief in the Hispanic market and of our belief the Hispanic fans have for open-wheel racing and Mario in-particular. This Hispanic demographic is the fastest growing market in the United States and a very important fan-base for the IndyCar Series.”
Dominguez, 32, is originally from Mexico City. He will be considered a rookie at Indianapolis and in the IndyCar Series, but Dominguez is a veteran of the Champ Car World Series with two victories, 11 podium finishes and one pole position.
“I am very excited about this new project," Dominguez said. "Racing in the Indy 500 is a childhood dream of mine. I understand I have a big responsibility since I will be driving the Mexico City car. I will be representing the colors of my city and my country in the most important racing series in North America."
Pacific Coast Motorsports will have a one-car team in the IndyCar Series and a two-car team in the Atlantic Series with Frankie Muniz and Carl Skerlong as drivers.
“I am very excited to continue my efforts with PCM," Dominguez said. "We just finished on the podium this weekend and that shows that we are competitive and can be champions together."

Atlantic Series test at Laguna Seca

Carl Skerlong, a driver for the Oxnard-based Pacific Coast Motorsports, was the second fastest driver during a two-day test at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Monday and Tuesday.
"Overall it was a very successful test," said Skerlong, one of two Atlantic Series drivers for Pacific Coast Motorsports. "We kept the King Taco car in the top-three throughout the test. I think we have a very good race to go back with in May."
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is part of a 12-race Atlantic Series shedule that starts with the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 18-20.
"Also we learned some things that definitely will apply to other tracks, but we were really going for a racecar for Laguna and I think we've got that," Skerlong said.
Dane Cameron, a rookie driver for Genoa Racing, was the fastest driver on both days.
Frankie Muniz, better known for his role on "Malcom in the Middle" and the other driver for Pacific Coast Motorsports, was the 14th fastest driver during the Tuesday test session. There were 20 drivers participating in the test.
"To run that strong at Laguna, one of the most difficult tracks we compete on, felt really good," Muniz said. "We made a lot of progress over the two days. The last run of the test (Tuesday) was awesome. That was the best I've ever felt in a race car. The car felt perfect and I felt like I was able to get a lot out of it -- it was awesome. If I'd been able to pick up one-tenth of a second, I would have moved five spots up the time sheets. It's just a test, so times aren't everything, but we are making a ton of progress every time we are on the track. I am in the hunt now, which is very motivating -- 2008 is going to be a great season. The Atlantic staff is putting together an exciting schedule and there were 20 cars at this test, the competition is going to be tough."
