Las Vegas test No. 2
The reviews keep coming in from drivers who have tested at the newly paved and rebanked Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The latest test involved four NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers, one from each engine manufacturer, earlier this week.
Todd Bodine from Toyota, Brendan Gaughan from Dodge, Dennis Setzer from Chevrolet and Rick Crawford from Ford were testing tires for Goodyear Monday and Tuesday in preparation for the Sept. 23 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
For Bodine, Setzer and Crawford, it was their first test at the new track. Gaughan was at the track last week with Kurt Busch.
Bodine, who won last year's Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, said he was pleasantly surprised with the track surface.
“I’ll tell you, I was a little skeptical at first, riding around in a (stock) Tundra, Bodine said. “But then I got in the race truck and I was very impressed. The track itself – the shape, the entries and exits, the corners – they’re much better than they appear to be. I think it’s going to be a really good track to race on. I’ve won here in Busch and Truck and I’ve always loved coming to Vegas. Hopefully we can get our truck just as good as it was last time.
Setzer said the changes were a bit unexpected.
“It’s a big, big change, said Chevrolet’s Setzer. “It’s a huge change – I cannot believe how much has been changed at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The banking’s going to be fun to work with, I think. It’s got some characteristics unique to Vegas already. We’ll see how it works.
