The "I Want a Different Director" Refund

| | Comments (0) |

OK, so it's not this city in Curtains, it's London.

Got a boot out of the notice that London's Donmar Warehouse production of "Hamlet" -- with Jude Law in the title role -- will now be directed not by Kenneth Branagh but by the company's artistic director, Michael Grandage.

Branagh -- who has directed and stared in a "Hamlet" or seven -- had to drop out of the Law Dane due to his directorial commitments to the movie "Thor," which is humorous enough. (Guess Law won't be cast as the God of Thunder of Marvel comic-dom.) Not to worry, though, anybody who booked tickets expecting to see a Branagh-directed play can cash in for a full refund as long as they do so by May 29 of next year. I'd supply the number and website for how you can go through that process, but if you're reading this blog to get that kind of info, thou art in the wrong place.

Let me repeat that: anybody seeking a refund because they won't get to see a play directed by Kenneth Branagh can get their money back.

This is "Hamlet" we're talking about. Staring chick magnet Jude Law. Even in London, people are going to want to see this guy live in one of the iconic theater roles. Michael Grandage runs the Donmar Warehouse. His credits include, among other things, "Frost/Nixon" and a whole bunch of productions starring Kenneth Branagh including the current production of Chekhov's "Ivanov."

Do you suppose the Donmar is going to be flooded by angry patrons saying, "I paid good money to see Ken Branagh direct Jude Law and I'm not taking this sitting down"

Just wondering.

About The City
in Curtains

As the theater critic of the Los Angeles Daily News, Evan Henerson goes to a lot of plays in a city where most people go to the movies. For the sake of the people who put on these plays — and, yes, for the sake of his job — he thinks you should do the same.
