A Pair of Thumbs Down -- Play and Venue
Heard from a reader today about my review of "The House of Blue Leaves" at the newly reopened Mark Taper Forum. Thought I'd share it in case anyone else wants to chime in on either the play or the playhouse.
Good Morning,
I read your review of The House of Blue Leaves and am not sure we saw the same play.
My companion(an actor) and I came close to sleeping through the first act. It was well cast but boring. The second act was slapstick and the third predictable. I saw The Goat twice because it was terrific. I don't care what the critics said about this one, it was a waste of my time.
As for the $30 million renovation, where are the improvements? A woman has to walk 2 flights of stairs down to the bathroom. I know there is an elevator but it can only accommodate so many people. The toilets are not automatic flush, and what's with black toilet seats? Then back up 2 flights and then 2 more to the top level. I wonder how they got away the handicap laws since this theatre is anything but handicap friendly. I have been enjoying the Taper for probably more years than your age, but at 5"7" I can no longer sit straight with my legs in front of me not touching the back of the seat in front of me. Dreadful! Last but not least the carpet is really ugly.
Not quite as bad as Disney, but close.
Will I return. You bet,But $30million, for what????

As I've said ad nauseum, I do so enjoy/crave/live for feedback of all kinds, especially feedback that _ agree disagree or otherwise _ is polite and doesn't call me names or insult my manhood (or lack thereof).
I liked the reference to Edward Albee's "The Goat" which is about as different from "The House of Blue Leaves" as it's possible to be. And I certainly like it when readers say, "I don't care what the critics say..." Yeah, absolutely. Your opinion is your own. What do we so called "experts" know. (And I'm not being sarcastic.)
And I really liked the, Last but not least, the carpet is ugly remark.
Other opinions? The line is, as always, open.
