I'm now running Ubuntu 9.04

| | Comments (2) |

The move from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04 was a bit smoother than that from 8.04 to 8.10.

I didn't need my video fix for Intel chips in 8.10, but I sure did need it in 9.04 (which I'd previously established by running the 9.04 live CD).

Once I got xorg.conf in shape, I had forgotten that even 9.04 doesn't include Firefox 3.5 by default. I'll be able to wait until 9.10 for that.

As I wrote previously, 8.10 broke my wired Ethernet configuration. I found that my static IP information from my last NetworkManager choice in 8.04 was in /etc/network/interfaces. And the wired Ethernet (eth0) is not being "managed" by NetworkManager, which means presumably I can write that part of the configuration file manually if I wish.

I haven't tried NetworkManager in 9.04 yet, but going from not having to read documentation in ... every other version ... to having to do so now is a bit unsettling.

Back to video. Now that it's working, I see no performance issues. Those must've been taken care of in previous 9.04 updates.

My understanding is that 3.5 was not an update of the previous version, it was a new install. Is it available in Synaptic?

Have a look at "Install Firefox 3.5 in Ubuntu 9.04 using Ubuntuzilla" at http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2009/07/15/install-firefox-35-in-ubuntu-904-using-ubuntuzilla/

I like Ubuntuzilla. That way you can install Firefox, Thunderbird and/or Sunbird ...AND YOU CAN UPDATE THEM!

Normally in Ubuntu the tab Help>Check for Updates is grayed out and not available. If you use Ubuntuzilla and start Firefox from the Terminal using the command "gksudo firefox" you can then check for updates. NOTE! You MUST NOT use the command "sudo firefox" because this will bork Firefox!!!

I can live without Firefox 3.5 for now ... I might even run Lenny for a period of time. If I really want 3.5, I guess I could run Squeeze.

New ways to sign in to comment: I just added the ability for prospective commenters on this blog to sign in using their AOL, Yahoo! and Wordpress.com accounts (for the past 200 posts anyway ... more than that will take an extensive, middle-of-the-night rebuild). That's in addition to the other sign-in choices, which include starting a Movable Type account on this blog, Typekey, OpenID, Live Journal and Vox. If you have trouble getting your Movable Type account verified, or any of the other sign-in options are not working properly, please e-mail me.
