looks like walk-on coaches are the way school dist. have to go. Teachers don't want to coach sports anymore or don't want to put in the time.
When I was at Santa Fe many years ago, we had a teacher and a walk on coach for softball. A couple of years after I graduated, the walk on coach wasn't given the team because they wanted a teacher to take the team. The teacher they gave the position to was a Santa Fe Alum and if I remember correctly, didn't start one game. She didn't make varsity until her senior year and it was because she was a senior. They let a coach go that had many years of experience and a proven record go, to give it to a teacher with no record or let alone played at the high school level. That's all water under the bridge. The coach has since moved on and is turning programs around at other schools. Please remember to do what's best for the teams!!!
Several years ago there was a movement by many districts and schools to hire coaches who are also teachers at the school because they could be trusted to handle budgets or work more cohesively with other sports coaches at the school. Today with the educational stakes being higher, teachers are finding it is not in their best interest to head coach a sport and teach. Unfortunately, complaining parents who resort to political tactics also discourage teachers from wanting to coach at least until they gain permanent status...
Coaches all have something different to offer--some experience, some knowledge of the game, some organizational skills. There are many coaches who did not play the game, including male coaches of softball, but gain their experience and knowledge in raising their daughters or coaching lower levels.
When is Santa Fe going to replace Hendry as Varsity Baseball Coach? This year finishing last with a 2-13 record should be enough for the administration to make the move that has needed to be taken for years. When was it that Santa Fe had a winning varsity baseball team? Time to bring in a real coach that will give the school a chance. After all these years of failing teams it is time to point to the source of the problem, Hendry.
None YA:
John had a proven record of 3rd place and losing in the 1st round. Annette wasn't much better. Getting rid of Harvey is the best thing that could have happened to Santa Fe Softball.
Dennis:
To get rid of the worst Baseball coach in the Del Rio League, the Athletic Director would have to fire him. I can't see Hendry firing himself. Maybe someone could fire the worst AD in the Del Rio League!!!!
