Waste of Christmas past and present

| | Comments (0) |

recycling-christmas2.jpgGreen your holiday with these tips from Recycle Bank, a company that pays residents in 13 states for their recyclables (not including California, unfortunately).

Holiday items you can recycle:

  • Corrugated cardboard boxes
  • Gift boxes
  • Gift catalogs
  • Newspapers filled and all of those advertising inserts
  • Wrapping paper (non-metallic only)
  • Non-metallic greeting cards

Reduce waste by:

  • Sending e-cards or cards made of recycled paper
  • Avoiding metallic gift wrap because it is not recyclable. There are many alternatives to gift wrap.
  • Using real, unbuttered pop corn to ship gifts. (I have not tried this and don't...

know how well it works.) The recipient can feed the pop corn to the birds.

  • Donating recyclable Styrofoam peanuts to your local UPS or packaging store
  • Including rechargeable batteries with gifts that require them.
  • Composting trees and wreaths after Santa has come and gone.

After the holidays be green by:

  • Bringing your own bag for shopping excursions
  • Opting out of catalogs you do not want to receive through Catalog Choice
  • Removing your name from all third-class mailing lists write to the Direct Marketing Association at P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, N.Y. 11735-9008
  • Opting out of credit card offers by calling 1-888-5OptOut (1-888-567-8688) or visiting www.optoutprescreen.com.
  • Donating unwanted items like appliances, clothes, gadgets, and cookware to charity.
