Waste of Christmas past and present
Green your holiday with these tips from Recycle Bank, a company that pays residents in 13 states for their recyclables (not including California, unfortunately).
Holiday items you can recycle:
- Corrugated cardboard boxes
- Gift boxes
- Gift catalogs
- Newspapers filled and all of those advertising inserts
- Wrapping paper (non-metallic only)
- Non-metallic greeting cards
Reduce waste by:
- Sending e-cards or cards made of recycled paper
- Avoiding metallic gift wrap because it is not recyclable. There are many alternatives to gift wrap.
- Using real, unbuttered pop corn to ship gifts. (I have not tried this and don't...
know how well it works.) The recipient can feed the pop corn to the birds.
- Donating recyclable Styrofoam peanuts to your local UPS or packaging store
- Including rechargeable batteries with gifts that require them.
- Composting trees and wreaths after Santa has come and gone.
After the holidays be green by:
- Bringing your own bag for shopping excursions
- Opting out of catalogs you do not want to receive through Catalog Choice
- Removing your name from all third-class mailing lists write to the Direct Marketing Association at P.O. Box 9008, Farmingdale, N.Y. 11735-9008
- Opting out of credit card offers by calling 1-888-5OptOut (1-888-567-8688) or visiting www.optoutprescreen.com.
- Donating unwanted items like appliances, clothes, gadgets, and cookware to charity.
