Cheap pest control

AntArtsy.jpgWith all the rain and winter weather you may be getting, a lot of pests are probably trying to make your shelter their shelter. Not good.

My colleague recently shared an ant tip that she got directly from the pest control guy she called the last time ants invaded her freezer, of all places. Poor buggers froze stiff before they could make off with a crumb.

Anyway, the pest control guy must be a real cheapskate because he told her that the next time the ants made a foray into her icebox she should use Windex with ammonia to scare them away. Try it - it's a lot cheaper than calling pest control.

Thanks, Audrey!

A long-time solution to ant invasions has been Avon's Skin-So-Soft bath oil. I keep a spray bottle of it in my kitchen, so it's always at the ready. This product has myriad uses, which can probably be accessed on the Avon website. Best of all, it's non-toxic. However, the Windex/ammonia mixture sounds effective as well.

One more cheapie way to control ants. It won't kill them, but ants will not go near Ginger. No, not your dog, Ginger, but that plain old spice you have in your cabinet right now, that Turkey day leftover, ginger!
I use it outside around my hummingbird feeder. Non-toxic, cheap, works like a charm.

i can confirm that windex works to combat ants. stops them in their tracks. the ammonia suffocates them.

Try baby powder. Seriously! Ants like to keep clean and you can see them cleaning their legs. Fine powder drives them nuts. I've used it and it works. Non-toxic, too. Only good in dry places, though.

Wonder if you have any ideas for rodent control in a house. The ant control ideas sound good- looking forward to trying Windex.

Thanks for your ideas on the site. dowjoe

I occasionally get roaches in my bathroom, even one big enough to saddle and ride one time! I've found that the roach motel-type floor traps seem to do the trick, as I rarely have any roach problems. I do the same in the garage where I have old school books stored.

I recently found a tiny roach in our kitchen - what an unpleasant surprise!! I'm hoping it was really just a water bug or something harmless. Innocence is bliss. ~Julia
