Get fit on the cheap

beach-body-beach-workout.jpgThere are lots of cheap and free ways to get fit, lose weight, and exercise, says a story in today's Daily Breeze.

"Experts agree that you don't have to join swanky health clubs or shop at high-end grocery stores to stay fit," the story says. "And that's good news in an increasingly budget-conscious economy. Outdoor workouts, city recreation programs and some simple nutritional tips can keep you healthy and looking your best without breaking your wallet."

The story recommends you check out city run recreation programs for wallet-friendly group workouts. This LA County Health Web site breaks down exercise opportunities in the greater LA area into eight areas, including the San Fernando Valley.

LaHikes.com has detailed lists and maps of hikes through the LA region. Best Outdoor Activity (BOA) magazine lists six types of outdoor activities, including fishing, camping, adventure, family, getaway and beaches.

In Long Beach personal trainer Justin Rudd runs a group workout on the beach that is $10 per session.

Here are five more outdoor workouts you can do at Runyon Canyon in Los Angeles, Drake Track Stadium in Westwood, Will Rogers State Park and others.
