Alternatives to trick or treating
A reader asked me for suggestions about where she could take her children on Halloween instead of trick-or-treating. I was clueless until I saw this list from the LA Parks Dept with 19 pages of events happening on Halloween.
Check out the list here. Most of the events fall on Halloween, with a few beforehand.
One listing at the Mason Recreation Center in Chatsworth is billed as a carnival with games and activities for all ages from 4 to 8 p.m. The event is free but the food is not. Call (818) 998-6377 for more info.
Also check with your local school, community group, or house of worship for alternatives to trick-or-treating. If you would like to share a Halloween event, please leave a comment so others can find out about it!

Local churches sometimes have an event called "Trunk-or-Treat" where folks can bring their kids for popcorn, music, games, face painting, treats from a chest (or trunk..hence the name)..cake walks, etc.
You might be able to Google "Trunk-or-treat" and your city to find out which ones are close to you.
I have an annual Halloween party at my house to counter-attack the negative Halloween violence/sterotypes that plaque my family of 4 kids every year. The only defense is a good offense! All of our "usual suspect" friends and relatives are invited, we have 10-12 pizzas, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, orange soda in dry ice as witches' brew, and some fun, funky music. After eating, we trick-or-treat about 12 houses, then everyone goes home to do whatever... after 1 1/2 hours, we're all done! All I can say is, it's a great time.
West Valley Christian Church/School has a fantastic Festival on Halloween night for tiny ones up through 5th grade, with all kinds of games, bouncer rooms, even a silent auction. It's located on Sherman Way, just west of Shoup in West Hills. Candy galore, and some free snacks too!
Vintage Magnet School is having a Halloween Carnival from 2:30-5:30. Their website is www.vintagemagent.net
