Landing planes costs more because fewer planes are landing

747-4landing.jpgHere's a financial catch-22. Fees to land an airplane at LAX are going up because airlines can't afford to land as many planes.

So many airlines have cut back flights to save money that the airport is not making as much money. So they are raising the landing fees on the remaining flights.

To land a plane at LAX it now costs $3.85 per 1,000 pounds, up from $3.35, according to a Daily Breeze story. Landing a Boeing 747-400 now costs $2,194, up from $1,909.

It's a nasty money trap that I'm betting is going to circle back and bite fliers in the bum.

Perhaps the airlines will take pity and spread it evenly among the passengers (as opposed to dumping it all on coach travelers). A Boeing 747-400 can seat about 500 people depending on the layout, which means the extra $285 to land is an additional 57 cents per person.
