Cheap cell plans for small talkers

Cellphones.JPGMy colleague Steven Rosenberg recently wrote a column on whether pre-paid cell phones are a good bet for folks who use less than 200 minutes a month. Most month-to-month plans start at 300 or 500 minutes minimum.

"All of the major carriers offer prepaid service," he writes. "Most confuse the issue with more than one way to "save," and by that I mean "spend." So studying each company's various options and matching them up with your phone habits is key to getting the best deal."

He compared prepaid rates from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Tracfone, Virgin Mobile and Net10.

His findings: "Best plan for those who use 30-200 minutes a month and don't mind spending $100 to start: T-Mobile to Go Pay as You Go."

Or, if you use 50-200 minutes per month and can only spend $20 at a time, go with Net10, he says.
