Hard to focus today

Layoffs.jpg Normally writing the Bargain Hunter is fun, goofy, and comes relatively easy to me. Today it's a different story. Exactly 22 of my colleagues in the newsroom were laid off today. All morning everybody has been watching everybody else, waiting to see who will be called into the editor's office next. I can't keep a thought longer than...what was I saying?

I'm not sure who is worse off - those who got a measly six weeks pay for years of service or those, like me, who are left behind to recover in a shell-shocked newsroom that will inevitably shrink again unless the genius' that run this place ever realize the Internet is the future. We have, what four online employees in the newsroom? Sure, reporters contribute to special online updates when there is breaking news, and many of us churn out blog posts night and day. But I don't think there is a sense that the online version of the paper is what will make or break us.

Many people spend their time tweaking the print edition, which has improved. But do folks really think cleaner fonts and new sections will be enough to make people buy the Daily News? Keep dreaming. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe young people will start buying the print edition in droves and advertisers will return. But with craigstlist and a million other sites where people can sell stuff for free, surely we'll never see all the lucrative classified ads return.

What do you think? What would make the newspaper, online or print, worth buying? What are you interested in reading?

There where only three reason's I get the Daily News. One is you, the TV section and the L.A.Com weekend edition. They have messed up the weekend edition so now there is only two reasons to buy this paper,

*I* subscribe to the print edition of the Daily News, but I *get* most of my news from the internet. Honestly, if my rabbits didn't need something lining the bottom of their cages, I'd get only the weekend in print or nothing at all. I am happy to see more of the Daily News being linked to in my local yahoo than the LA Times...
I used to browse through the LA.com every day but since they changed the pagination it's too hard to even do that...

The store sales and coupons are worth the price of the subscription alone! And, the T.V. program information too!

I pay for the paper for 1 year at a time, I have been doing this for many years, but I had already decided to stop the paper when this year is up. Due to the genius at the top turning the paper into the Antalope Valley,Palmdale, Lancaster local paper. I am in Simi, I want to know what is happening in the valley. The whole thing sucks now.

I love the Daily News! I can get world and national news online, but Daily News is the only place to find out what's happening in L.A.--expecially the Valley.

I subscribe to the Daily News because I still like the feel and smell of a newspaper early in the morning with coffee.

The best feature is the Letters to the Editor, then the cartoon Ziggy, then the TV section and Greg Wilcox usually in the Business section.

I have found some very good CD rates advertised in the Daily News and for that, I'm very grateful.

For those that are commenting about the pagination change to the la.com section, let your voice be heard...Call the Daily News to let them know you are unhappy with it & also email them to let them know. If enough people are unhappy, they will hopefully change it back to how it was. I was told this was just a trial...
We are interested in different recipes and food articles they had in LA.com before. With the new format, they have had only 1 recipe!

Hi Julia,

It's the wave of the future. A good friend of mine was laid off after 34-years (one year short of her 65th birthday so she could collect unemployment. Companies now want to hire contractors and part-time employees so they don't have to spend $$$s on 'benefits'.

At least 'your' paper has a TV guide which I give to one of my friends as I prefer reading or watching films on DVD to TV. Also the Sunday coupons are often very useful.

Since the paper was purchased by an east coast billionaire, the quality sank faster than the Titanic! I used to pay a year at a time, now only by quarterly. The first thing they did was ruin the comics---the only entertainment in the paper. I don't watch soaps on TV, but did enjoy the serialization of several comic strips, Judge Parker, right at a critical point in the story was completely stopped. For Better or Worse, you had to hunt for, and they added a bunch of really lame strips. There aren't any recipes mid-week anymore, and news is so biased I don't care to read it. I don't need the excessive full page ads as paper fillers either. So it sells the paper for now, but as we all tire of the b.s. and drop our subscriptions, maybe they will wise up. In the meantime, tell your friends to be on the lookout for new employment, and thank you for all your helpful columns. If I don't see it anymore I'll know you found a better job before the ship went totaly under!
The paper should be more mindful of what is being accessed on line, so that they know what the PUBLIC! is interested in, not what some editor is trying to shove down our throats. It could mean the difference of being in business or bankruptcy court.

I have subscribed to the paper for decades...but this is my last year. I have repeatedly complained about having to put my body down on the ground to retrieve the paper from under the bushes....EVERY DAY!!!!

I love your column byut much more enjoy it online.

Keep up the good work!

This is so sad. The Daily News is best when it covers Valley news: development, crime, specific neighborhood issues, etc....all the stuff the Times ignores. I think there's hope for the paper if it expands feature writing on local issues--good writing always draws readers.

Rock on Bargain Hunter Babe!
I look forward to your smiling face, and the spread of bills you so shamelessly display
love, your nyc coast sis

When I lived in the Valley, I used to get the Daily News but moved out to the Conejo Valley a few years ago but visit the Valley often. I recently found this blog which I've enjoyed reading so I'm one of those readers who might end up searching The Daily News online if I find something of interest. So, my point after the ramble, is that it seems like there's much more opportunity with online news. I have canceled all my newspaper subscriptions since I don't have time to read them in their entirety and read my news online.

I still love being able to hold a newspaper in my hands while I read it, rather than reading a computer screen. I also like being able to see the whole article in front of me and not having to scroll as I read. I prefer the Daily News over the LA Times because I feel it is balanced and not biased. I may read the same story in the two papers, and there is generally a slant in the LA Times. I have noticed decreased advertising in both papers. It does not help that there have been so many consolidations, for example Macy's is the only department store anymore doing much advertising in the two papers. We use to have Bullocks, Bullocks Wilshire, Buffums, Robinson's, Broadway, I. Magnin, May Co., Montgomery Ward. They all had full page spreads daily in the papers. that is a lot of advertising that has gone away because of mergers.

Is the Daily News is turning back into the Green Sheet? The most important parts to me are the Valley Sports and Sunday Puzzle. The LA Com section is ruined by the page size & format I miss the TV guide that showed all programs each day. Find somebody to buy the paper and return it to its former quality.

I like the paper but the Daily News customer service is so poor. I can see why readership is down. They billed my credit card without my permission even though I canceled with plenty of notice. It's been like a month and half and still no refund. I call and they don't care. I was considering renewing my subscription for the coupons but forget it. Daily News needs an expanded sports section like L.A. Times.

I love reading my paper. I have to have my ads, my suduko and yah, the news! The TV and internet give such little information, and I just can't watch them that long(especially the internet). And then there's commercials(TV). Gotta have that paper!

I would like to see recipes, coupons, info about local events for the family and stories that are positive and uplifting about people in my community who are doing good things and making a difference.

I love the Daily News. Aound our house we call it "the Good News newspaper." I like knowing about local valley events before they happen and the Daily News is good with festivals, weekend happenings etc.

J Wojcik said:

The main reason I get the paper are for the coupons and to read you, Julia. I do, however, try to read the paper every day. The Daily News is a much better paper than the competition..your paper keeps it short and sweet and to the point. I am really upset with the way the LA Com section changed. In fact, I would really like the entire paper to be the way the LA Com used to be...much easier to read and hold onto.

I enjoy reading your column as well as the Business Section with my breakfast. But the overall print version has gone downhill in the 15 years that I've lived here. I have a really sweet deal on my subscription, but once that expires, I probably won't renew since I can find most of the information online.

Regarding layoffs, you have my heartfelt sympathy. Downsizing is everywhere. I work for a large company whose single goal seems to be to get rid of every full time US worker that's not in upper management. In order for this country's economy to rebound or thrive, big business will have to rethink their position. If the middle class is unemployed, who will buy product? Not I. My only goal will to pay my mortgage and property taxes so I can keep my house. No new cars, clothing, dining out, new cds, computers, other fun stuff and most likely no health insurance. Who profits then? Nobody is looking at the bigger picture and that's a real shame.

Mollie said:

I am sorry to hear about your colleagues.

I would love to receive the Daily News, again.

I moved around the corner, so I stopped my subscription. Someone from the Daily News called me and asked if I wanted to receive the paper, again. I said, yes, and gave them my new address.

My credit card was charged, but we never received the paper.

When I made several attempts to sort it out, I received random responses. They said my name and address information was not in the system. They said my credit card wasn't charged. They said they don't deliver to my area. They said a manager would call me back in a week. Basically, I got the run around.

I finally called my credit card company. They investigated it and took the charge off my bill.

Call me old fashioned, but I LOVE the two hours I spend reading the Daily News and that other major newspaper each morning. Longer, of course, on Sundays. I hope we never lose the printed word. The coupons more than pay the cost.

I am so sorry to hear about the staff layoffs. After reading about it I woke up the next morning; my 1st thoughts were on that article. Thank you staff for making my morning read a great way to start the day!

I'm not sure why I still subscribe to the Daily News. I guess it's because I do enjoy reading the info you give us, I enjoy the Saturday edition just for Josh Siskin and his knowledge on plants, etc. I hate the way they have changed the LA com. I read the paper each day, because that's something I have done since high school, but not really impressed with this newspaper anymore.

I don't know if you've noticed or not, but a large population of Mexican folk, legal or not, have moved into Southern California in the last 20 years, and are growing in numbers with amazing speed thanks to a little math thing called "exponentialism."
Compton is now about at least 75% Mexican, for example, and growing.
Ironically, the liberal immigration policy embraced by many southland newspapers have come home to roost.
It may amaze you to know that there are many people now living in Southern California who do not read english newspapers now or simply prefer reading in their native language.
My advice would be for your paper to hire reporters and editors fluent in Spanish, and begin plans for producing a Spanish edition paper while you still have the money and resources to make it happen.

Good luck!

I'm very sorry to learn of the changes to the newsroom! I cancelled my subscription after the delivery person disregarded my vacation hold twice in the past year -- leaving my driveway littered with papers for weeks. This is a safety issue, too, so after the 2nd time this happened I was forced to cancel. This will date me, but I miss the paperboys/girls -- who would never leave papers in the gutter.

I'm very sad that the 'things they are trying' seem to made the Daily News less appealing. But when they changed my favorite comics they brought them back when enough people complainted. We are moving this year after my husband retires (to Camarillo). Hope to still check out your web site for all the really good bargins. Let us know where you end up so we can change papers. You might want to check out Ventura County papers are the area is booming. Good luck.

Funny this topic just came up last night at dinner; I am a mother of college children and have been reading the paper since I was in middle school; my daughter's college friend has never read a newspaper, and I think that is probably the "norm" for the computer generation. I am very unhappy with the Daily News changes that has made it lose its "professionalism", which include the "News in Brief", changing the size of the paper, changing the LA Weekly format, etc. However, the "college" person would love the "News in Brief" since everything is geared for the "5 second" attention span (thank you video games and internet). The Daily News now appears to be nothing more than a "throw-away" local paper and it saddens me; it has lost its identity and definitely needs some therapy.

I really hate reading things on the Internet. I just have this thing about seeing all of the print in front of me. You lose your place scrolling down. As for classifieds, I would prefer the old standards and the recycler. At least I know that I won't get gipped. I understand your feelings since I currently went through the same thing during the writers strike. I hate having someone in control of my fate because of a bottom line number. We love the Daily News since it isn't overboard liberal like the LA Times. We need news that informs and educates unbiasly. Give the facts and let us come to our conclusions, don't force feed us. Tell us the good things that happen along with the bad so we don't have a cloud of doom hanging over our heads all day.
I hope things get sorted out there.
